Having "some problems" with my passenger side window motor. Seems to have an intermittent failure. It's stuck a handful of times in the last 3 years, but has always resolved itself before I've been able to set to it with a multimeter. It now seems to be properly dead. I've checked the power feed, and its fine. Running the motor off a direct 12V line, worked briefly, once. I've removed the motor, to let me put the window up again (getting that out with the window stuck right down was fun...), and with it sitting in free air I can get it working from the normal electrics <25% of the time. So, I now need:

1) A new motor (brushes look fine, no not them, and it's so rough to turn by hand that I suspect the bearings have gone as well as whatever else is up)

2) Instructions to get the window gear out of the door, so that I can re-fit the new motor.

Just shoving the motor back into the socket doesn't do (2); either the worm gear on the motor or the spindle itself seems to get jammed just inside the gearbox. I've tried juggling the window, but it still won't properly engage, so I think I'll need to get it out where I can see what I'm doing when I fit the replacement.

Philip.

PS: On the plus side, I should have a completely new car soon. This year: cam, shocks, air inlet, starter, temp sender, stereo, ...

For the benefit of the archives...

The window motor, gearbox and guide are effectively a single assembly, forming a slightly open L-shape. There are two bolts and a cable-tie holding the assembly to the door, and a further two holding the window glass to the guide's runner. The lower door bolt is below the speaker hole, and connects the inside door GRP to an S-bracket, and thence the gearbox. The upper bolt is behind the rubber sheet, about half-way along the door, and so far up the sheet that it's almost impossible to get to. Both screw into captive nuts; there's nothing to lose inside the door.

The window sits in a metal clip, which is attached to the runner with two bolts. These can be undone from behind (ie nearest the outside of the door); there isn't enough space to undo the nuts, which face the cabin. When undone you'll need to catch (in order from the seats) a nut, a washer, a "spacer" nut, a washer, and the bolt itself. The clip that holds the glass is quite thin on the bottom, and digs into one's hand quite unpleasantly.

The motor mounts onto the gearbox with two vertical Torx bolts (why?), and has a worm gear built into the shaft. The bottom end of the shaft sits in a bearing inside the gearbox which will almost certainly shift when you remove the motor, preventing you from getting it back in. The gearbox can be opened, to allow re-assembly of the gearbox and motor, by removing it from the guide rails and drilling out the four makeshift rivets. It seems to hold together nicely afterwards with plenty of thick grease and a couple of cable ties

Haven't yet got a new motor, but do at least have the old one back in place, and (currently) working.
