Taking the front splitter off the car to get the body off, I noticed that it was facing backwards rather than forwards. I know that the car has a a bump at some time and that is possibly why it is the wrong way round. But it seems that it is less likely to get ripped off this way round, only thing I wonder is how it affects the handling. can't try it as the car is in bits. Any thoughts?

I'd be interested in views also... mine's never had a splitter (whilst in my ownership) and I've not experienced any handling problems... I assume it only come into effect at high speed to stop the front end lightening?

According to the 'Bible' it does mention that the splitter helps to redirect airflow underneath into the engine compartment helping to cool the motor down.

I dont think they exactly redirect air... A slight reduction in pressure behind the engine under the car increases the flow thru the bits you want. Just as theoretically raking the back higher should achieve similar effects. Maybe that makes it easier to visualize that it doesnt matter what shape it is or how it points ~ any blockage will have that effect. Its not redirecting air, just hindering air flow to change differential pressures and encourage air to go into the grill and exit the engine bay under the car(that seems the most likely direct effect IMHO).

Many swear by the splitter and just as many swear at it... .

Dont treat these things too sceptically TD, you are right to try them...

In my early days I did a motorway run to a shopping centre on a hot summer day. The number plate 'fell off' the grille at said shopping centre (sole purpose of my visit to the dark depths of a hidden parking lot evil) and I made the return journey. Indicated temp fell 10C! yikes Suffice it to say number plate has never been near the grille since then... Some small changes have much bigger impacts than you imagine

Spend exactly, check out my profile to see my bike number plate and locationyesi am of the belief that there is no way that opening can flow enough air with a standard plate in the way, bearing in mind it also supplies the engine intake as well my thoughts are this car was never designed with a big stonking no plate over the grillsmash

FWIW i posted splitter thread a couple of montsh ago. I fitted one but it didn't last very long in less tahn 100 miles it had been ripped off twice, the first time i collected it & bashed it back into shape & refitted it, second time i realised it was doomed & didn't bother. It did make a small differemnce at high speed stability but not worth the butt clenching moments on a run IMO

No Dave that was springs 'n' things. There were two splitter threads. One was www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?p=1&f=8&t=366082&h=0 and the other was embedded in that. Absolutely right about the front No. plate though!

(This next bit is not for Dave who I believe could tell me a thing or two on the subject!!!) The creation of a low pressure area under the car to assist cooling is a hard concept to convey sometimes. idea It helps if you can imagine the smooth flowing air passing under the car suddenly getting stretched as it encounters the splitter. And as the air gets stretched (and consequently 'thinner' or less dense) a vacum is created which looks for more air to suck into itself. It finds it in the air belting out of the bottom of engine compartment and obviously as that air is now sucked out of the bottom of the car of course this in turn 'sucks' more fresh air in through the front (or 'allows' more in). Phew - who was it that asked for a physics lesson this afternoon

Dont slag me off as being clever... If it doesnt involve ping-pong balls, hosepipe trials (or even better water cannons ) flowing stuff is way beyond me. I do know a chap tho who occasionally thinks he's an air molecule (he is very smart) - but every time he says it I just think of Woody whatsisname as a sperm....... Then its very hard for me to concentrate rofl

That's IT....that's IT That's the term we were missing!! - I knew you were clever Dave!! thumbup AIR MOLECULES - loads of 'em suddenly go whizzing by the splitter and get separated from each other. So they call some mates down from the engine bay to make up the party - so leaving extra space up there for more of the buggers, cold ones, to come riushing through the big open door at the front. Oooh...here comes that Woddy Allen to distract you again... sperm

What I wanted to know really was does it matter which way the splitter is facing. Forward would probably give downforce, rearward possibly lift at high speed, thoughts ??

Got the Body off on Monday, chassis not as bad as I thought.

Got the Body off on Monday, chassis not as bad as I thought. The front 3 inches of both out riggers is gone as it the metal plates thet the seat belt reel mounts on.
