I did it - Got my Chim..... Fuel.... 95or98?
Discussion
Got my first TVR. A 96 P 4.0HC......
I know it's probably here somewhere but what fuel are you guys using, 95 or 98?
I was told that the car has been running on 95 all it's life and that was recommened by the supplying TVR dealer. I met Peter Wheeler at a motorshow a few years ago and he said that 95 was fine unless you hear pinking then use Super. I wouldn't know what pinking is as don't think I've ever experienced it.
General help and advice will be appreciated.

Well done Phil and welcome to the fold.
I generally use 97 and try to put some shell optimax(98) when i can.
If te dealer and previous owner have been using 95 without this pinking then i would carry on using it.
Pinking, sort of clicking noise that i think u will hear speed up as the engine revs do.
But will stand corrected if this is a bad synopsis

It is covered in then bible 2 with a decision tree. Also see the unleaded FAQ on my website. Should be super/optimax unless the car has been modded for 95 octane. Fauilure to do so can in some extreme cases damage the engine through pre-detonation/excessive pinking.

Cheers Steve. Will be visiting my local Shell garage from now on. Is it likely that damage has occured due to the use of 95 up until now?
I have bought your book and only just got it, what page(s) am I looking for?
What does pinking sound/feel like??
The car runs a little lumpy compared to my euro-box hatch but I thought this to be becase of the type of car it is. I know it's going to be difficult for you to say at a distance but does this sound normal? Not bad and ticks-over fine.
Shedloads written on this before, but I use 95 in mine. I tried Optimax but couldn't tell the difference! To tell the truth, the car did do 2.5mpg more on Optimax but when I calculated the price difference t wasn't worth it. On the other hand, my Alfa 156 2.0 went like the proverbial shot off a shivel, so I give that a squirt every now and again.
On the pinking thing, imagine tying a bag of bolts to your crank pulley and starting up! Believe me you'd know if your motor was pinking.

The whole point of a performance car is the performance

Tend to agree with you there. Like buying a SLR camera and buying cheap film to go in it.
Have decided to run on 95 for a couple more tanks to get used to the feel of the car then will be trying Optimax.
I tried it on my M3 Evo but didn't make much difference but then I had always run that on Super any way.
I did read the EVO mag report on the cleaning benifits so if it keeps the engine in better condition then Optimax may be the way to go anyway!
I don't really have an opinion one way or the other, just can't see the point of putting Optimax in if there's no discernable difference. Okay, the cost is irrelevent but whilst I'm not tight by any means, I don't believe in spending money I don't need to. At the end of the day it's a personal choice or a choice made for you by your particular engine, some hate 95, some are okay. When I bought thr car from Peninsula they told me 95 was fine, unless I really wanted to use Super.
Good luck with whatever you decide, either way you ain't gonna stop grinning 'til Christmas!

Pumps with prostate trouble?
I find that the biggest determining factor when refuelling is finding a pump nozzle that you can actually fit all the way into the tank neck even then I can never manage more than a pathetic dribble before the pump stops due to backflow.
Always have a tissue at the ready to deal with drips and splashes.
