Fitted recored radiator in the week but not totally happy that it is right - offside locating pin a bit tight in the locating hole and the bracket onto the 'bobbin bolt' a bit tight too. Could someone do me a favour and measure the length of their rad along the top edge?

Cheers.

The recored rad has a matrix size of 720mm and the tanks add 35 mm each end (overall width 790mm). Can anyone confirm this is the correct size?

Excuse the poor drawing!

Just measured mine (newly fitted, expertly by me today ).

The core is 695mm across the top, each end tank is 50mm. Total 795mm.

I assume it would be ok to have some slight variation in these sizes as long as the locating pins/brackets are set correctly?

Sorry peebee, I am NOT taking the rad out again to measure the distances between the pins and brackets!!!

Thanks Flintstone, that seems to tie up with mine being able to be fitted but being a bit tight on the locating pins and top brackets - another 5mm would make all the difference!

I have some concerns that the pins are tight against the edge of the locating holes and the bobbins are under lateral tension, and this may be putting the rad under tension and not isolating the rad from bumps sufficiently...

Oooh.

Have you fitted it then? If not can you not measure the distance twixt the locating holes and the locating pins? See if they match?

Alternatively I could have a crack at measuring mine in-situ or drop in on the place I got my replacement, see if they still have the old one and measure that.

Have to be tomorrow (Monday) though as I'll be away for five days afterward.

Thanks for the offer Flintstone. I fitted the rad last Wednesday (being an impatient soul!) but had to push it down into the second locating hole and pull the bobbin mount to one side to get it through the locating hole.

However, yesterday I took the nuts off the top mount and checked it again (with the pipes still connected but with the top off the expansion tank - to avoid any influence that the pressure in the pipes may have had) and found that it was more comfortably in the locating holes (I was able to lift it and relocate it without difficulty)and the fitment onto the bobbin bolt was more easy (presumably after three days in situ the rubber had 'adjusted').

From your measurements I think they have made the core 5mm too narrow. I am assuming that the brackets are standard and if the overall width of the rad is 5mm narrower then the locating points will be 5mm out.

It's all a shame really because I was really impressed with the way that the company dealt with collecting the rad and returning it in two days. Price was good too. But all this is pointless if the rad itself isn't properly made and causes problems/anxieties!

If the only problem is the pins are out by a few mm why not just make one/both holes into a slot?
The pins are only there to locate it, as long as it is secure and you have the right core fitted it will be fine.

There's no need now as "....found that it was more comfortably in the locating holes...".

Thanks for your comments. I'm happy to live with the situation and keep an eye on it. The rad's guaranteed for two years and so it it does get stressed and leak it will go back under guarantee - and if it doesn't there's no problem.
