I'm a little confused?

My car is a 1994 430

I've noticed that there is water coming out of the expantion tank, about half way up, just where it rubs against the left engine bank?

My questions are:

Does it have a swirl pot and expantion tank?

Is there an overflow valve half way up the expantion tank? (this is where the water was coming out)

Could this problem be down to a faulty (Blue) pressure cap (Golf Mk2 I think it is)

I'm going to take the expantion tank off but i'm not sure if it's joined to the engine (as above) apart from the obvious bolts (i.e 2 on the bracket attached to the water pump (long bolts) and one on the bracket attached to the engine.

Can anyone please help with this?

Many Thanks
Neil.

The swirl tank is a single unit on the 430. It should only leak from the manufactured orifices: cap as you said, badly sealed otter switch or at the hose connections (top one is quite tricky). When removing the bolts thru the water pump will leak ~ they also need coating upon re-insertion to prevent corrosion.

The pressure caps do seem to 'weep' a little in normal use - best to check coolant level is not falling.

Hi Spend,

What about half way down the tank? This is where the water was coming out but I can't see whats there because it's so close the engine bank. Could the tank be cracked there ?

Could be, but its certainly not a common occurence (most of the swirl tank probs are with later serp cars where belts/pulleys grind holes in tanks).

I would give it a good clean and try & trace exactly where the water is coming from.

OK thanks Dave.

If I take the expantion tank off and undo the top hose will water come out of there? I think I will leave the bottom one on until i can see whats happening with the expantion tank first.

Cheers
Neil.

You cant actually get the top hose off unless you can move the swirl tank or the stat cover

They (should) all have water in ~ I find it easier & cleaner to syphon out of the filler cap then the rad bleed hole before I start (dont like coolant all over the garage floor!)
