I did a search and looks like a very common problem.

A very very slight tap to the starter motor with a jack handle and it started.

So my next question is what do I do to stop it happening again?

Engine won't turn over?

If the battery is OK (lights don't go out when you try to crank the engine over, for example) then you have a faulty starter motor.

These tend to get temperamental with age. Often, if it's starting to play up you'll find that if you hold the key in the 'starting' position for a minute or so it will eventually kick in. If that doesn't work then get your glamorous assistant to hold the key in the 'starting' position while you tap the body of the starter motor with a long piece of wood and a hammer.

The problem is likely to get worse until eventually you are completely stuck. The full cure is a replacement starter motor.

Mod-wise do a wiring mod which increases the power available to the starter motor an may cure the symptoms, at least for a while and possibly permanently.

Thanks Peter,

My glamourous assistant did the job, although I bet its the first time anyone has sat in the drivers seat wearing white fluffy bunny slippers.

I think a replacement is about to be sourced. (not for the glamourous assistant but the starter motor)
