Chim/Griff 3-Way Speaker System - Carl Baker?
Discussion
I have a 450 Chim and am wondering if anyone with a Chim or Griff has had a 'Carl Baker' 3-way speaker installed (particularly with the Clarion head unit)?
Carl has recently upgraded my old Pioneer head unit for the Clarion and put in the antennae mod (so I now have an excellent radio sound quality & twice the number of radio stations!) and an iPod aux cable....and while I was there we talked about upgrading the whole speaker system to 3-way (as you do!).
Before getting this work done...I was wondering if there is anyone in the North Hampshire/Surrey/Berks border area (I live in Church Crookham (near Farnham, Fleet, Aldershot etc)) who has had the above work done and would kindly let me to listen to it and compare sound quality with my present setup?
BTW...today's work was another excellent bit of workmanship by Carl Baker...I am delighted.
Many thanks, Owen

Owen, greetings from the M5 Owners Club....I would have thought that In Car Audio was supplied by a Rover V8, not an Ipod Nano!!! Are you going soft?? No car really offers much in the way of acoustic perfection regarding audio and surely spending £££ on this means less £££ for a run around France after Le Mans or a swift three days at the Nurburgring. Don't waste your money on new speakers!!! Richard.
Hello Richard,
You are probably right of course (said in a sulky voice)...I err seem to have a mod/upgrade adiction...I see it and I want it...I think I might need some rehab...
That said, there are times - e.g. when one is in Grand Tourer mode - that a bit of LOUD Black Sabbath can be very uplifting!
Don't worry about ££ for LM .... I have been saving up in my secret Post Office account...ohh err not long now - I have the latest Evo guide to LM to read through on the train to Twickers tomorrow for the Sevens - are you going? I'll be in the Kings Arms about 11.00 am...then off to the stadium for about 12.30ish
Anyway, how's the mighty M5? Is it out of hospital?
We need to catch up again soon...we said June didn't we?

Owen,
Many moons ago I spent thousands on 'in car hi-fi', loads of noise, lots of wires, huge sub woofers etc....but the weight, lack of insulation and issues about resale value put me off a repeat on my next car.
In something like a TVR where space is at a premium I would go for a decent amp, a speaker upgrade and a good 'head unit' without going mad or cutting the interior up.
Your Le Mans trip should be fun, take a camera, sun cream or wellington boots if wet, and have fun.
The M5 is looking great, have been using my new porter cable random polisher to remove swirls, the cooling problems are fixed, it runs beautifully and my wallet is empty!!
Will work on a meet, enjoy the rugby....I was going to Brands today but in this weather the racing won't be so good. Perhaps ITV and Monaco will keep me happy!

Hi David,
Thanks for you reply...the Head Unit is a Clarion DXZ758 Music Catcher and at the moment I have Pioneer speakers running through a Pioneer amp. The replacement speakers under consideration are the MB Quart Reference range installed with the 3rd sound layer (sub woofers). I understand that a 3-way MB Quart setup, combined with the internal amp from the Clarion, is so good that I would not need the Pioneer amp...indeed that the sound experience would surpass the 2-way Pioneer units and amp...
But I would like to hear the difference myself if possible!
Regards, Owen

Sorry, but what is a 3-way speaker system ??
I am no audio installation maestro, so I can't give you technical detail..but, as I understand it, it is the addition of a 3rd set of speakers...in my case 2 mini Sub Woofer speakers.Nuggs said:

What Pioneer amp ? Whilst the Clarion on board amp is good(mos-fet etc), an external amp would be better at anything over 50w output where the voltage has to be "upped". Of course we then get into real Watts or "TVR" outputs ! I have two way component speakers(6.5cm bass) and a 2x200watt RMS, 20-20k (posh distortion proof) amp and would say that it sounds absolutely great. My last Griff had two 10in subs in the rear,6.5 bass and £200 a pair tweeters !, slightly over the top and something i did not want to do in this Griff. Of course your unit can also take the Clarion Ipod adaptor that means you do not touch the Ipod, just use the head unit controls, the only way to "legally" use an Ipod in a car ! (well if you play with the Ipod)
