I seem to remember reading that running an engine mix lean is bad for it. is this true and if so why?

A lean mixture itself would not be bad for the engine, but it does cause pinking (or detonation, or pre-ignition) in much the same way that running the engine on a low-octane fuel does. At it's extreme, pinking can cause physical destruction of the piston crowns and other related damage.

An engine running lean will also run hot.

Any leaner than these cars already are(emissions for cat purposes)will be flat spots and performance as flat as a nuns tit, their already borderline standard this motor design combustion chamber/pushrods/2 valve heads shape coupled with bobweight dizzy naff injection system etc was never designed to run this lean, hence why some lurch & buck at low speed(on the cat map)nuts
