P.A..S Noise problem Intermittent
Discussion
Wonder if anyone can help, I'm struggling with an intermittent problem.
The power assisted steering makes a terrible whinning sound when I use the car in the morning. After a couple of miles, if the car is switched off. eg I go to the shops. I start her back up and all is quiet.
for info, the fan belts have been changed and P.A.S fluid topped up I think, when it was at the garage. It started the day after this. I have tightened the fan belt controlling the pas pump, because it seemed a little slack but its not fixed it. Any ideas please. Can the PAS fluid be overfilled for example.

yes pas fluid can be overfilled and can create whining if overfilled according to a buyers guide ive read-pas also gets noisy if theres not enough fluid.also it could be your new belt-apply some french chalk to see if it stops the noise.if the pulleys were moved out of line or slightly damaged when belt was changed this can also create a noise.
Problem solved and of my own making..Doh !
I'll share my embarrassment in the unlikely event somebody does the same thing.
I had replaced some of the broken zip ties in the engine bay the day before it went in for new fan belt etc. One of them held the pas return pipe but not directly in view. I had tightened the zip tie up too much and it had restricted the pipe about halfway.
I suspect when the rubber had heated up with the engine bay temp, it had helped enough pas fluid get through and so was not causing a noise.
by the way, the noise I am talking about is a major whine, not the slight noise you sometime here, which I believe is common.
