Have a small prop as i have a squealing noise on start up, it lasts for 2-5 mins and only happens when its cold, what i cannot fathom out what it is causing it, alternator, pas, water pump, belt tens thing, or even the fan belt. It does not change pitch when the engine is reved ??, any ideas ??

Not sure if it'll help but I had a rather big squeek on startup that would last a little bit until it was warm... Cured with a new serp belt... If its lasting 2-5 minutes though its probably something else but worth checking anyway as its only a tenner to replace!

I had a similar problem a new belt cost £19 genuine, solved the problem. The old belt was full of cracks, this caused the squeal because of the auto tensioning adjustment on the belt.

I have a spare belt if you'd like to swop it as an experiment. Also have a can of belt spray, stops them slipping.

Where in Cambs are you?

Strange it doesn't change note when the engine is revved. The belt would have to be in very bad condition for it to last for 2 - 5 minutes as well. I had exactly the same but for 1 - 2 seconds also only when cold.

There was a useful thread a while ago http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?t=3... which lead me to Millers Oils and a can of their "belt dressing". This is really a spray on adhesive which works short term in my opinion but unless you want to keep re-applying it (NOT a good idea to be spraying adhesive around the front of your engine!!) I'd go for a new belt and see if that fixes it. Oh, one other throught...are youi SURE it's coming from in front of you?? Sometimes my fuel pump squeakes and high pitch whines a bit after start up - but that's hot OR cold and very infrequently. Nick.

Probably the best plan because for the belt dressing product to be properly applied I reckon you need to remove the belt and then re-fit it. Not the most fun of jobs when the belt will be tacky with the newly applied adhesive smile If you're going to do that, might as well simply fit a new one if they're only £19.00. Nick.

I have the same problem. I think it might be the clutch release or input shaft bearing. Try putting the clutch in and see if it stops or changes. There is a little bit on this in the bible IIRC.
