Baffles or bombs
Discussion
Lots of chat about taking out baffles or fitting cherry bombs. Trying to decide which would suit me (I can only say I want something that sounds "better" not just noisier, if that makes sense)but then reading the Bible there is mention of possibly losing power by doing either of the above. So......anybody out there who has done either noticed any difference in the performance and how did you decide between the two options? Thanks for any advice.
I went for the bombs - but only as Offords who do this are just down the road from me. I've had my car next to Oggs Chim which has the straight through sleevs (from Austec I think) and whilst it is a little louder than mine I feel mine has a deeper less hollow sound - though that is personal opinion.
Certainly no performance loss for me either, it's only the silencers so shouldn't create a problem in this department. It's when you start messing with the main Cat in the Y-piece that you can begin to affect performance and back pressure IIRC.

I've jusy fitted Offord's cherries to mine. I know a couple of people that have sleeved exhausts and they do sound good. Can be very loud though and if not sealed all round the tube ends will whistle. Whether you like that or not is down to personal choice. Also, if he lagging is not replaced, it can leave a hollow metallic sound.
I went for bombs because they're a little quieter (unless you're minus all cats), very deep sounding and properly sealed. I've had them on a week or so and am told they will get a bit louder as they bed in. But at the moment it's perfect IMHO. Very deep, rumbly and louder (not v.loud though) on tickover, cruising - you wouldn't know it's there and foot in the carpet - NASCAR.
Open the throttle slightly on over-run and it's burbles and pops!
I'm trying to source a noise meter, but I doubt it'd pass a track day test - although not by a huge amount.

Thanks for the advice, looks like cherry bombs for me. One last question - are Offord's cherry bombs particular to them or is it a generic term and they buy them in from a.n.other and just fit them? I live too far from Offord to use so if there is a particular type of cherry bomb to go for it would be useful to know. Again, thanks in advance for any help.
Germs,
I did endless research into doing myself. "Cherrybomb" is like "Hoover". It is a brand name that has over taken the object. People call their Dyson a hoover right?!
Cherrybombs are actually bullet silencers. I.e, they are small cylinders with a (very) narrow wall of wadding - bit like a bike can. Offords, I think, build their own. Cherries are available elsewhere, but getting a definitivre answer on which you need is difficult. If you opened up your silencer and did the appropriate measuring, chances are you may be able to get a pair.
You could do what I did, send your exhaust to Offords via carrier. There and back about £45 - I couldn't drive it up and back for that cost, not even slinging it in the back of every everyday diesel 406. Offords knocked a bit off the price too as they didn't have to remove from and re-fit to the car

Hi there.
Cherry bombs are definitely the way forward. I had the baffling removed from the silencer originally and while this made it louder and gave it better crackle 'n' pop, I had bad resonance between 2500 and 3500 revs in the cab.
The new Cherry bombs have completely blown me away - a much deeper tone and popping to die for - the previous poster has described the overall performance briiliantly. In the cab at steady revs you aren't uncomfortable but when you start to play its awesome.
I had mine fitted at Torque RVT in Middlewich (01606831244) so may be close to you.

I've been thinking of getting this done to mine and I'm not too far from Torque RVT. Do you mind me asking what sort of price they charged, I'm sure I can convince the other half that its worth dipping into the wedding fund for!Hi there.
