Am looking at buying a 97 at the moment which has the milky marks at the corner of the screen, I've seen a few like this and thought it wasn't a big deal but the Steve Heath Bible says to beware of this.

Any comments about this? can it get a lot worse, could it delaminate altogether? is it something I should steer clear of? as replacement sounds a bit hit and miss.

Quiet common delamination is not going to happen.
I would get the seller to knock £300 of the asking price.
Alot of these cars have the same problem i think it due to water ingress aroud the seals.

[/quote]Spot on,you can stop it getting worse though with careful use of windscreen sealant.

Ours has had a slightly milky area since we got it. It's never got any worse. Not such a big deal I think...unless very bad.

I'd say that the majority of cars you look at will have some de-lamination of some form in the corners. The seals aren't the nest and water does get in.
Mines getting quite bad now but still hasn't gone past the black edge. Unless it's really bad then don't let it put you off.

One way of hiding the problem that I have seen, is to cover the whole black area with vinyl black tape on the outside of the screen, it was very effective and cheap, I would knock the price down though of the seller.

Can you give me a few tips on where to put the sealant please. Mine has just started to go in the corners, and want to stop it getting worse.

Cheers

Im in the glass trade and i cut and manufacture laminated glass.
I have seen delamination albeit not that often what causes this is water entering the two panes of glass reacting to the pvb (glue) layer causing staining would'nt be so bad if it was'nt painted.
To try and stop this is to seal the glass edge with silicone.
I can't see how you would be able to get silicone underneath the seal, you could prise the seal back but could quite easily catch the edge of the glass and crack it.
I would live with it BTW mine is milky in one corner im considering trying to claim for a wingcreen on the insurance.
Anyone else claimed?

when i bought mine it had the same problem and i claimed on my insurance to get it replaced, it cost £50 and was installed by the people next door to Austec and they did an excellent job of it and it was very quick and easy, as soon as they realised it was a TVR they siad to bring it in as it would need to be done at the garage rather than as a roadside job to make sure that none of the leather was damaged, it does n't affect your no claims either by the way!

worthwhile in my opinion!

Agree - it's tempting to leave it alone, especially since screen replacement comes with the risk of leaks around the new seals if they are not fitted perfectly and all of a sudden you end up with a bigger problem than a small cosmetic one you started with. If it's an issue for the prospective buyer, the 300 quid price reduction sounds very reasonable.

Mine too - it's been like that for the past 5 or so years. Never got any worse, not a big deal.

Mine too. IMO, there's a real risk that having it replaced could result in damage to the top of the dash if horror stories on PH of cowboy screen replacers are anything to go by!

Indeed. Not just the top of the dash though - the entire windscreen surround is at risk.

Thanks everyone - I've bought it and think I'll just live with it for now, any black sticky tape would have to be very shiny to blend in and the risks with replacement seem a bit high.
