Stepper Motor Question

When the stepper motor is taken out would you expect to see the pin fully in or fully out? The reason I ask is that i've just bought one from e-bay and when I fit it and then remove it the pin is always out. The old one, however, when removed the pin was always fully in.

The pin was in on both the old one I removed and the new one I got from eBay (presumably from the same seller as on the other thread).

Yes it was the same seller. If the pin is out would it be fair to say it's faulty? I'm just about to try you suggestion from the other thread.
