Hi there.

I purchased a 95 Chim 400 back in the middle of March and I have to say i'm pretty chuffed.

I've had a bit of work done so far (rear suspension needed poly bushing but I knew this when i bought it) and a new clutch and all in all i'm pretty happy with the purchase. Awesome car and a real head turner.

I do however have quite a bit of wind whistle from the drivers side window when I get up above 50 mph. Is there any effective way of getting rid of this or is it a case of TADTS? I've tried adjusting the window up as far as I can but I can't really go much further without the lip on the roof seal getting trapped when I shut the door.

Any ideas? Cherry bomb conversion to block the noise out?

Snashy,
You could try replacing the targa roof to window seal it's only cheap and easy to fit. The old rubber tends to go soft and loose it's push on the top of the window.
Just a thought.
Paul.

Try relocating the targa top.

Even tho' it has a locating peg, it is v easy to get non-central/lop-sided.

Cheers.

Cheers folks.

Trev, I've tried to shift the position of the roof on the locating peg but haven't managed to fix it. Once I snap the back section into place it kind of finds it's own centre anyway so it would appear that it's kind of fixed in that position.

Paul, any idea where you can get the rubber from for the roof seal? Does this just glue onto the roof section? I was a little bit worried about doing this in case I make a hash of it or worse end up with soggy carpets in the rain...

Also, on a different subject, anyone had the cherry bomb conversion done at Offords? Just how loud is it and are there any MOT implications?

Cheers

Chris

The other thing to try is to gently bend the ally window "guide" in towards the inside of the car - just a fraction though, and with the window fully down.

I have the Offrds Cherry Bomb conversion - the best £150 i've ever spent on a car. It is not much louderr at tickover, sound a bit like a motor boat at gentle pull away (not that this happens too often), and a lovely loud visceral burble at speed. Its not too loud for long motorway drives (4 hours), and bangs crackles and spits on the over run evil

Oh yes, and it gets better as it "matures".

I had mine measured at 107 Db running at 4500 RPM recently.

Go and do it !!!

If you have the STUCK-ON in version of the targa-to-glass seal then upgrade this to the later alloy extrusion and the lip seal that fits into the extrusion, its an easy job and allows the seal to be packed (under the alloy extrusion) to suit the glass. IF you already have the later version remove the seal and unscrew, and pack to suit the glass.

The rake of the window frame can be adjusted by removing the door trim and releasing the lower locating bolt at the bottom and moving it within the elongated hole. (sometimes the penny washer that hold the frame in place clashes with the door external skin and needs filing to allow the movement that is required.

Think it's certainly a case of "they all do that" to a certain extent. On mine it's the passenger side window which leaves a bit of a gap with the roof seal, towards the rear of the car. If memory serves there is a screw hidden but accessible through the brush seal between the glass and top of the door. This sets the maximum height of the glass (and also slightly alters the slope front to rear). I think one of the brackets inside the door can be loosened, nudged, and re-tightened to adjust the front to rear angle of dangle of the glass too. Of course, if the door as a whole has sagged on its hinges, that too will effect the slope of the glass and therefore how well it seals onto the roof panel and how much adjustemnt is possible by moving the glass alone. I reckon if you persevered playing around with all these adjustments, you'd eventually get close to elliminating the whistle. Is it worth the pain, not so sure.

Thanks Adrian.

The targa to glass seal on my car is just a rubber section glued onto the targa panel. it's kind of a Q section. The tail forms the lip over the top of the window glass. So, does the alloy extrusion you are referring to screw into the targa top?

Apologies for my ignorance but it's my first Tiv and i've only had it a few months. Hopefuly the weather will improve soon and the roof will remain firmly stowed in the boot anyway....

E2DJH, i'm liking the sound of the CB conversion.. The car is due a service pretty soon so providing there's nothing else that needs spending on it I think i'll hand Offords that £150.. Should turn a few more heads in the little village I drive through on the way to work anyway!!!!

Cheers

Chris

Whenever I do a new roof, we convert to the later seal (as the lip seal is far better and I can adjust the seal in place) TVR Power (they advertise on PH 02476366177 ask for Andy) should be able to supply the 2 alloy parts and 2 rubber seal, you need to get out and about and look at the way the new seal fits and how much the seal sticks out for and aft of the targa panel, ask here for a local or get along to a TVRCC meet.

Have a look to make sure the rubber seal in the window guide is seated correctly and to the top of the A pillar. Mine had fallen down and was causing more wind noise than normal. smile

Me neither and reckon it's one of those jobs where you could end up worse off or at least get half way through and have one of those "What did I start this for?" moments.....Unless of course it's really bad/annoying.
