Please can someone advise if this can be done without removing the exhaust (i.e. just by removing the exhaust clamp).

I'm aware that putting some straps around the manifolds will help clamp it all back together again.

thanks

Yes it can. If you want to remove the Y piece completely, I recommend that you separate it from the rear pipe before you undo the clamps to the manifold. The easiest way to remove the Y piece from the rear pipe is to loosen the clamp and slide it off the joint to the adjacent bit of pipe, do it up again, this gives you something that you can lever a long screwdriver/pry bar against to push the joint apart.

Errr, sorry to be a damp squib but on my chimp there was no chance of removing the 'Y' piece with the exhaust in situ. Seem to remember there was insufficient clearance to chassis cross-members by a country mile 'though now as I'm typing this I'm wondering if it was the removable member. Whatever, I ended up dropping the exhaust which is no biggie. Have fun re-sealing! wink

Seconded... My y-piece/exhaust sleeve needs the exhaust sliding back.

Teach me to read the questino properly, I thought it was about removing the Y piece without disturbing the manifolds. You'll need to move the rest of the exhaust back an inch or two to disengage it from the Y piece. You don't need to remove it completely, and you don't need to touch the manifolds.

...ma la domanda è domanda in Italiano, o è un questo certo dialetto Barbarian. Siete sicuri gli Italiani li capite, o voi state corrompendo il loro Inglese?

You take off...put it back together using straps and everything....clamp it up and the next time you lift the bonnet you have black marks on the heat shield where it has been blowing....so you take it off again...clean it up...struggle to get it back together again and a few miles later you end up with black marks on the heatshield...so you.....etc etc... hehe

Take it you ARE removing the main cat while you have the Y section out???

So you do the job properly and remove the manifolds without all this forcing the Y piece lark in with ratchet straps,oh and it dont blow eitherrolleyeswinkyou bodgerslaugh

Have you got bolts or clamps for the manifold flange Mike? Bolted flanges are much easier even tho they require a gasket.

Intention is (was!) to remove and refit the CLAMPED Y Piece with minimum effort (i.e. remove exhaust if needed but leave manifolds in place).

This is purely for acoustic reasons, so if it's not a runner I'll not bother.

Don't forget that there is a bolt fixing from the Y piece into the bottom of the engine block, just forward of the joint to the exhaust system! You'll never get the Y out if you haven't undone this (i know from experience!!). Are you going for the full De-Cat as i thought your Chim sounded lush at Le Mans, and did you get one of those Y sections off the Ebay for MOT time...

Don't worry about clamping up the manifold joints, Andy W just struggles with anything mechanical...laughlaughlaugh

Cheers, Paul

I don't find it any problem sealing the Y piece to the manifolds, but in any case I'd far rather play about with that than muck about fitting the manifolds under tension. Those manifold bolts are problematic at the best of times and sooner or later they work loose, need regular tightening, and eventually wear the block to the point that they strip the threads. I say give the manifold bolts as easy a time as possible. If you can't get the Y piece clamps to seal I'd say there's something else wrong.

thanks to the power of PH, I've now got offers of assitance, use of a garage with pit, and a selection of manifolds and Y pieces on offer, so THANKS to everyone; I'll let you know how I get on, albeit maybe not this weekend.

The trick is,fit the manifolds loosely then fit your Y piece clamps but just nipping up then when you have finished tightening the manifolds i then come back to the Y piece clamps knocking the clamps well onto the joint with a plastic mallet before nipping up again job done has worked for me twice,if you do the job progressively going back and forth then i can see no problems cocking it up or having to force the Y piece to manifolds jointwink
