Can anyone help?? Ive located the chimaera I want, its a 99 4.0 but it has a rattle/tapping noise from the engine. The best way I can describe it is it sounds identical to when I had a MK2 Golf that needed the tappets fixing. It is very evident on cold tickover and driving but settles down when the engine heats up.

The dealer thinks it is the exhaust manifolds, is this likely or could it be cam problems maybe or something serious??

From what you say it is quite possibly it's the exhaust gaskets. For the cost of the gaskets and labour (about £10 and 2hrs for a garage who knows what they're doing) I'd expect the dealer to sort it as a gesture of goodwill if I was seriously looking at the car.

thanks for the advice, yeah they have said they will replace the exhaust manifolds, I was just wondering if this is likely to fix it or if there's something else up

On a similar note - my engine has a slight ticking type noise but only when the car is moving. Any ideas?

Don't forget another reason for a ticking sound could be a small stone trapped in the 'V' on the 'fan' belt. Had this on my Chim and thought it was the Manifold Gaskets!

My Chim developed a tapping like that. I decicided to change to oil to see if that helped. Along with the oil came out a loose nut!!! No idea what it was from, but the tapping stopped!
