HI
My Chim gearbox has gone and I've managed to get my hands on an LT77 gearbox from a triumph TR7. Does anyone know if this will fit straight in to my Chim 1994 4.0? Obviously I would need to use the old bell housing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ross,
What gear box did you have in it before it failed?
If reverse gear was below 5th then you had the T5 box and the LT77 will not fit
without changing the clutch, bell housing and prop shaft to name a few parts.
If however you had the older rover gear box you may be in with a chance but don't quote me as I don't know much about the earlier box.
Hope this helps.
Paul.

Thanks for that. I defiantly have the old rover box in at the moment. Reverse is to the left of 1st gear

Ok Ross,
Sounds like you may be in with a chance.
From what I remember the early Chim boxes were fitted to the SD1 Rover cars, but I would need to have a read of the Steve Heaths bible to double check.
Might be worth speaking to RPI or V8 Developments as I'm sure they would be able to tell you if the second hand box will fit.
Cheers,
Paul.

Not sure if TR7's even had 5 speed, never mind Vitesse spec (thats all teh TVR is). You will need to use the remote linkage from the TVR thats all.

Its a 5 speed LT77 from the TR7, though I'm pretty sure the oil filler and oil dranage points are in different places on mine!!

There were "different" versions of the 77 box. The TR7 one will fit, use the old bell housing that was on your failed box. The versions changed ratios and strength of gears

The only issue may be that "vitesse" boxes fitted to the SD1 had uprated 5th gear to cope with additional torque. Be aware that your TVR will be pushing out more than a Vitesse SD1, so will the TR7 box cope ??

You can try and see. You can also ask a specialist gearbox supplier (as mentioned in earlier responses - RPI or V8 Devs). Can you get someone to look at your TR7 box ? Check the gear pump or replace it anyway as a precaution.

I fitted a V8 into a TR7 so a 3.5 Ltr V8 works with LT77 on a TR7.

The real question will be how long will it last ? Probably as long as any other LT77 so long as you aren't sprinting/Track daying it every weekend....!!

Good luck.
