i still have my cutting out problem.i got a fault code reader that said lambda sensor.changed that no codes the car run fine for two weeks.yesterday starts cutting out again only when its hot and coming to a stop at lights or cornering.if you disconect the ecu the car is fine for a while.the car has had new stepper,plugs,leads,temp sender,code 21 come up and then didnt come up again this is tune resister could that be it .i also get a poping from my petrol tank.when it was cuting out yesterday i diconected my stepper to get me home and it was ok ish.this car has been in and out of garages and i have spent thousends on this car and had nearly five years of unhappy motoring.so please could someone help me.thanks,jay.
Jay,
Sorry to hear about your problems. I think that a popping noise from the tank is fairly common although mine has never done it.
However, it may be that the tank is not venting causing fuel starvation so maybe change the fuel cap.
Or if the problem can be reproduced easily what about driving without the cap on for a short distance (obviously with a low fuel level and no spirited driving) to eliminate this as the cause.
One thing that Chris Baldock at James Motorsport advised me to do when my tickover was erratic was to disconnect the air intake pipe into the throttle body and clean the butterfly with carb cleaner. Also count the number of turns of the adjacent air screw to screw it right in so you can put it back to the same position, then remove it and clean it and the hole, again with carb cleaner.
Although some people will say that it's necessary, I was also told by Chris and Dream Machines that having disconnected the stepper motor you need to reset it.
I cannot find the procedure for this but its something like;
Disconnect stepper and switch ignition on for 10 seconds.
Reconnect and ignition on for 10 seconds
Igntion off for 10 seconds, then on for 10 seconds then start engine.
Doubtless someone will be along to confirm if this is correct and others to say it doesn't need to be done, but it worked for me, and this from two different guys that know what they are doing.
Is the speedo working OK? The idling does use a road speed input so this can cause a problem too.
Also I see that you are in Essex. People speak very highly of Leven at Basildon although I have never used their workshop facilities, so maybe that would be a good option if you can't sort it.
Lastly what fuel are you using?
Again opinions vary, but to run a tankfull of Shell V Power to see if this helps would be easy, my 2000 450 only likes this and Tesco 99. Anything else and it runs like a pig especially at low speeds in traffic and at idle.
Good luck, I'm sure you will get it sorted

The cutting out can be loads of things - I had the same problem as it cut out when coming near to a stop, and it turned out to be the ignition amp. Swapped it for a new one after advice from here and all has been well since .......Mine used to stall everytime I dipped the clutch approaching junctions once it was warm. I found resetting the throttle screw on top of the plenum as described above pretty much did the trick. Factory setting is 2 and a half turns open. Mine was around 4. Only done it once since and an ECU re-boot cured that.

You don't mention changing the rotor arm. There has been a bad batch in circulation. I had your symptoms and replacing the rotor arm cured it. Probably would be wise to change the distributor cap at the same time. Make sure you get one from a trusted source. Good luck. Just looking at this one and the lambda sensor issue I had exactly the same problem on my chim. When hot either 1 bank would die or the whole engine. Looked at everything on the old girl with no avail. One evening last Autumn whilst bored I started a typical engineering trait of stripping the her down. Upon removal of the Y piece I found my problem. Hard to belive but the pre-cat had been moving about in the manifold and had been smashing into the sensor tip - so hard that the cat matrix was dented. Its not a major job so have a quick look.
