The car is in the garage having the head gasket replaced. The garaged have called me to say one of the cylinders is darker than the other and as such they think the head unit might have cracked. They want to have it pressure tested to be sure.

I have liaised with another mechanic who states this is unlikely as the car is not leaking any fluids with no performance loss. He states there is no need to pressure test it as it can be done with a simple dye test.

If there was a crack is there any obvious indication that it would be cracked from driving/poking under the bonnet myself?

Just add that the garage aren't sure there is anything wrong and they are just guessing - they say one side might be a different colour from different heat burn.

It is possible to crack without being into a waterway... There have been a couple of reports of heads needing welding up / replacing IIRC. Basically if you don't trust the mechanics on the job, why did you let them start it?

I have used them before on my previous car without incident. Strange as it sounds it's just a gut feeling that something isn't right from speaking with them. They haven't done the basic tests that you would expect (yes I have been doing some internet idiots guide to cracked heads since their phone call).

Fingers crossed it's just a faulty head gasket. My long drive this weekend sould tell me if there is anything else wrong with the new head gasket kit fitted.

Overheating in sub motorway speeds. Garage have inspected and confirm the gasket has gone (common fault).
