I use the corner plates at the end of the outriggers.

Really? I've been told by several people this is one of the srongest places as theres several chassis members all joining at the same point.
Similarly I was told never to jack up in the centre of the front cross-member as it was too weak a point/had no support in the centre.

Which bit is always the rustiest? I wouldn't personally but up to you. I'm no expert but the central backbone and pieces at 90 degrees (square box) are the area I use.

depends on the condition of the car, if it's rusty , use the main box on the backbone, and fix the outrigger. garages use 2 post lifts on the outrigger corners fyi, and if you ever get a flat you'll need to change it using those points, so it was designed to be lifted that way.
