Anyone got any recommendations for essential tools / tool kit required for general maintenance jobs etc?

The obvious springs to mind.

Hammer (most important), large socket set, spanners, good old Heath's bible, a book on relaxing techniques when you realise that 5 minute job is going to take the weekend.

Axel stands are a must and a good supply of plasters

Another thought - Decent jack. Mine doesn't actually get underneath the front of the car so have to drive it onto some wood first!

Spanners, spanners and more spanners.
You can never have enough spanners. Long, short, half moon, in metric and imperial. You need lots of spanners.

A good socket set and a set of long sockets and various extension bars.

Various pliers, standard, long nose and circlip (in and out)
Good screwdriver set
Insulating tape and cable ties
Axle stands are an absolute must and you may even need 2 sets.
Inspection lamp
Sikaflex black silicone
UHU type glue
WD40
High temp grease
Rigger Gloves
Latex Gloves

Good hand cleanser

Radio

I suppose anything else depends on the job. Put it this way, if it costs £250-£350 to change your manifold gaskets but the gaskets cost around £30 for the set, if you do the job you've got a minimum of £100 to spend on tools and still be quids in. You'll soon have a decent toolkit if you think like that.

Did I mention spanners biggrin
