I know this subject has been brought up time and again (I did a search) but I'd like some up-to-date advice if anyone's got it...

Currently got Goodyear Eagle F1's all round, and they're going to need changing at some point - sooner rather than later. Did a quick search about and found some Toyo Proxes TR-1 fitted for £91.38 on blackcircles.com - anyone know if they are any good?

What's the best option for value/performance these days...? Any ideas are more than welcome!

Don't you like the Goodyear Eagle F1's
I've read some good reviews about the Toyo's but they need to be beed in for the 1st 300-500 miles and this can be scary.

I'm perfectly happy with the F1's, just wondered about the Toyos and others as they seem to be better priced?

Not too worried about bedding them in though, I've got a big old trip coming up to the Rugby World Cup, so the Autoroutes should do that for me in a day...

Toyos seem to get a good write up?

As other threads have mentioned, you can only get the Dunlop SP9000 in the Z speed rating for 15" wheels. The Toyos are only available in V speed rating. You would be advised to confirm with your insurance company if this is ok.

The Toyos are a W rating - which is higher than the Z so I'd guess this would be ok? Or is this different?? Novice speaks...

Speed Rating Miles/Hour Kilometers/Hour
U 124 200
H 130 210
V 149 240
Z 150+ 240+
W 168 270
Y 186 300

I'm not planning on trying to reach the 168 mph limit..!!

Toyo 205/55 R15 only available in V-rating from blackcircles.com
Toyo 225/50 R16 *is* available in W-rating though.

I have Toyo's front and rear.

Yes the front do have a lower rating, but in all honesty I really don't think I'm going to be reaching those sorts of speeds (have hit 150 on a track for a short period with no side effect)

I like the ride and feel of them. - Personal choice, but they do do the job well enough for me.

As well as blackcircles, you could try mytyres.co.uk - sometimes have good deals

Just a quick point - Andy @ tvrmonster has them front and rear with a W rating (higher than ZR) which is worth knowing. Assuming my local tyre fitters are happy to fit them for a decent price, this is by far the best value way of sticking new boots on that I've found.

w is not higher than z, it's just a sub classification which came after the z being over 150mph was seen to not be clear enough with many more cars being able to do 150 plus. z is over 150, whereas w is upto 168 iirc

I have Falken FK452's (Z rated) on the back (16inch) they are very good. Still running s03's on the front, when they wear down I will have the same problem of which 15incher to go for as I dont think they do 452's in that size

I ended up fitting 16" estorils to the front of my Griff - tyre choices now much easier and I went for Falkens all round - great result.

I have also recently found some Yoko's that are the right sizes and speed rating. They are W speed rated, which should be sufficient. Don't know what they are like though.

Ads it depends which point you are trying to make. If, like JT, you wish to inform your ins co of any deviation from ex factory gates then W is a variation. If you want to know what is legal then you're back to "suitable for the car and the use to which the car is being put" IMHO one of the most sensible laws ever written.

I would guess that for most people V rated are OK (this has been confirmed by a few who have written to their ins cos about this) but there is no one rule fits all.

I have just replaced the front's on mine - 225x50xZR15. The only tyre I could find with Z rating was the Dunlop SP9000.
Insurance companies may approve a V rated tyre but bear in mind that at the next renewal you will have to declare this for every new quote you obtain (The is the vehicle modified blurb) and then they have you over a barrel. The best quote I could get was £117.50 per-corner but most places I tried were around the £120 mark. I guess this is due to limited competition/supply and only a few distributors feeding into the chain.

Seconded...I have FK452s on the rear of my griff and they are by far the best tyre I have used...incredible grip but nice and progressive break away with almost non existent tramlining and feels very stable at high speed. I ended up with nankang on the fronts with very similar qualities. both soft compound tyre better suited to our lighter cars. Apparently the Toyo, although a softer compound than some is still not that soft which is why it can take so long to bed the tyre in and can cause tramlining

Yes very true. I personally would consider W rated tyres though as effectivly they should be on par with Z rated i believe. I really was just throwing another option in the mix! smile

Excellant tyre and seem to be very underated on here. Good prices as well.
Just a shame they don't offer them in the 15"
