Loads of legal issues I think re font and spacing.
Unless you go for a completely standard format the plates you buy are technically signs and you choose to put them on your vehicle.
In practice it probably depends on how "standard" the finished article looks........
I had a border and TVR logo put on mine and I am happy with it.

When I got a private plate it came with a note from the DVLA about how to have your plates made up. Upshot was that as long as the spacing wasn't messed with to make the letters/numbers look like something else it was OK. Ironically it said NOTHING about typefaces/fonts. The copper that stopped me was most bemused when I had mine made up with a non-standard typeface and he stopped me to give me a ticket and I produced the note from the glovebox !!!
