Hi Guys , just about to whip off the heads,( 4.0 V8 ) after I've bought another socket that is , (broke the first one) and it occured to me that up to now I've always followed the head bolt re-torque path after a few miles or so ,which is ok on a kent crossflow but would be a **kin nightmare on this beastie ! What with all the amount of pooh you have to shift just to get at them . So my question is , do these stretchy noo fangled aftermarket all singin' head bolts that you can purchase at reasonable cost , eliminate the need for this operation or have I got to bite the bullet and do the job properly? ( I'm using composite gaskets if thats any help )

Ta........ Nick.....

If you use the later stretch type bolts and torque them correctly then you will not need to re-torque them.

When I bought my cam kit from V8D, they were very much of the opinion that stretch bolts are bad news as they can work loose. I was supplied with non stretch replacement ones, tighten them to 70lbs/ft and Robert's yer auntie's live in lover. The only bummer is you'll need a hex socket to tighten them.

Ta for that guy's , I've since checked with my local garage and yes indeed the 'latex' bolts need not be re-torqued . Dunno about them coming loose tho' they were pretty happy where they were on my motor , didn't want to move at all ,in fact I went and bought a new breaker bar and tough as old boots socket for the job and had to extend the bar on three of them with a bit of old tube.OK I'm not as young as I was but a reasonably fit and healthy 14 stoner with all my own teeth and let me tell you the veins were bulging more than a bit!!!

I noticed there was quite a heavy oily gunky residue around one side of the inlet ports on both manifold and heads although the rest was pristine. Also the tops of the pistons were hardly stained in fact I wiped off all that was there with a bit of WD40 but the heads and valves were quite 'cokey' Summat to do with the oil breather I expect unless you know better??
