Hello everyone,

unfortunately I haven't had a chance to get behind the wheel of a chimaera yet, but I'm convinced it's the car for me. One question though, do I want one with PAS or without? I'm not used to car's without PAS but the car i have been driving for the past 5 years had very heavy steering considering it was PAS. It was not however a sports car.

What are everyone's feelings on this issue? Thanks.

I have owned both, a 99 with PAS and my current 98 Without. to be honest once moving there is not really much between them, but you will notice the difference in parking or slow maneuvers as obviously non PAS is a lot heavier. However my wife at 8 stone soaking wet does not have any problems so I think you would need to be either exeptionally weak, have some sort of disability or just plain lazy not to cope.

It is when you start having rack leaks that you may wish you had never opted for PAS, as in my experience it took a respected main dealer 3 attempts and a month to 6 weeks off the road each time to try to sort the problem, and in the end fluid was still seaping out into the gaiters. (MOT faliure).

This was my personal experience which really spoilt the ownership of my 1st car, but I dont think an isolated one. If you do a search on this site you will find many bad reports on rack refurbishments and the times taken.

I have had both , depends on where you live and how you are going to use it . I live ont he side of a mountain in Wales and prefer Non PAS as it has much more feel. But if i am going to do lots of slow stuff then its a advantage .
Seems though resale is sometimes easier wit PAS .

I'm still toying with the idea of using the electric pas from a Vauxhall Corsa. The level of aasistance is variable so you can choose the best setting fo you. It may be my winter project. I'm kind of hoping some one else has a go first though!

My old Chimaera didn't have PAS and wasn't a problem. Sure, you can't steer with one little finger but I certainly didn't care even when parking. And I'm no He-man either.

I think i'm just gonna go for the one that offers the best package all round as I'm not especially fussed either way regarding power assisstance, engine size etc. it's gonna be my first sports car and I currently feel like I'm 8 years old and it's christmas morning I'm so excited about getting one!

Wýsh ý had not had PS - Car off road still. Has broken 4 týmes ýn past 12 months! - Last repaýr lasted 3 weeks! Stýll ongoýng to sort ýt out. My advice ýf your rack goes wrong ýs to take to a place (ýf there are any) where they remove repair and refýt all in house, otherwýse the garage blame the company that did overhaul and overhaulers blame the garage that removed and refitted ýt. Just goes round ýn cýrcles and you end up payýng all the time. Should be an update on my one soon hopefully when i am back in England next week.

Power racks are also impossýble to find if broken beyond repair.

Having a power rack had meant my car being of road for 2 months this summer and cost me a lot. Would not have agaýn!

Rant over.

Mine has PAS, and I wish it didnt. Not through any mechanical problems, its just that I think it would have a bit more feel and bite without it. On saying that though, I have yet to try one that doesnt have it.

If there are any local Griff / Chim owners out there with a none PAS car, I'd love to feel what the differance is. Is it possable to convert a PAS into a none PAS?
Easy
drain all fluid
Strip the rack down remove all seals
Make a fluid loop if you have to keep the pump, to stop it seizing or fit a shorter belt and remove the pump

Ta daa no assistance

However the PAS rack input shaft is designed to twist and so provide a pressure to the rack pistons. I doubt it would last if it was suddenly asked to transmit all of the steering torque all of the time.

So I wouldn't do the above unless you fit a non PAS rack.

You be able to find an owner wishing to convert theirs to PAS so you could arrange a swap?

Ive had one with PAS and one without. Id have with if given the choice but would always buy on overall condition rather than spec. On the non PAS Chim I just adapted my technique to ensure I was always slowly moving when arm twirling. This made a big difference.
Mrs Phlap concurred but is happier with the PAS on my current 500.
