Ok..was [still is] running lumpy when under a low speed load. Replaced the stepper - the only difference is it spends 2 minutes searching on tick over now...or stalls...frown

When running it feels OK.

Sometimes - on full acceleration the is a sudden 'JOLT' as if the car had been slammed into gear. Almost like a backfire...that very momentarily makes the car jump. Then carries on as normal.

This happens in an instant - backfire like...but only when under full boot.

Hi Gorvid
I had a missfiring problem wich sounds similar.
I found that a couple of plug leads were touching the exhaust on the near side pipe.
Also I had another similar problem where the ht leads were touching the bonnet heat shield and also causing misfire.
Good luck

I have exactly this problem. I am hoping someone can let you know the answer soon, otherwise it's off to Austecs!

I had something very similar to this earlier this year and couldn't work out what it was and thought i need to book it in for a service and just would drive it without accelerating hard, then, about a week or so later i was on the phone to the A.A (not the one for a drink problem wink) as it had died on me pulling away from a set of traffic lights on a dual carriageway in the centre of Croydon.

A.A man came out and diagnosed the problem as being the distributor cap as the elements in it were worn down so not making right connection (or something like that)

I then replaced distributor cap, rotor arm, and had to replace H.T leads as i was not able to remove some from the ditributor cap without pulling them apart (so presume they were on there way anyway)

I did have a look under the dizzy cap....and one of my leads came loose and i repaired it.

I'm not really sure of what i saw under the dizzy.

Maybe replace it and the leads...scratchchin

Just looking back at reciepts, distributor cap was only £20 and rotor arm (worth replacing at same time) £10 so not expensive by any means and if they don't turn out to fix it then no harm done.
Magnecor leads on the other hand somewhere in the region of £90 - £100 if you choose to go for them OR you can go for the cheaper ones for around a 1/3 of that.
All easy to replace (even for me) car was back up and running lovely after them.

There is a known problem here that has nothing to do with distributors, coils and leads but may be what you are describing. It coincides with the fans cutting in - in the most obvious case you get a momentary electrical outage - very obvious when driving at night as the lights got out for a split second yikes It was suggested by one of the most knowledgeable contributors on PistonHeads - GreenV8S - that it might be a connector inside the steering column but I was never clever enough to find it, or change it.

Hmm....

But to only ever happen when gunning it at high revs - AND - a lumpy runner...??
