Can some of you give me an idea how much oil your using per 1000 miles for example.
I seem to be using about 2 litres per 1000 miles is this the norm?
cheers

Dunno what the 'norm' might be at all but mine certainly uses a fair bit, maybe what you're experiencing. I don't worry about it as it's a big crude mill, being used hard, providing it's not smoking noticeably, pinking/detonating, or leaking like a seive, what the hell? I'd be more suspicious if the level didn't drop to be honest smile

7k miles in nearly 2 years and never had to put in a single drop of oil between services. Currently on my way to Spain and back - about 3k miles so might have a different tale to tell when I return but so far...... zilch.

And yes it does get driven. No engine rebuilds as far as I am aware and 51k on the clock. No smokey exhaust either.

Mobil 1 15W-50 is the oil in question.

would not worry to much about how much it is using but always make sure it on upper level of dipstick before you use it ,,this should ensure you dont suffer no problems.mine by thye way needs about a litre to keep topped up batween 4000 mile services

I'm told that 500s drink more oil than the smaller engines. I reckon mine uses up to 1 litre every 1000 miles. Seems to be using less since I switched to topping up with Silkolene from Mobil1 - probably all in my mind though...

My 500 drinks oil too - around a litre every 700 miles or so. I have spoken to a few specialists who advised that this is fairly common on a 500, just due to the way they are engineered.

About a litre every 750 miles but she runs very clean and there are no leaks. From what Steve Heath's book (The Bible) say's, this is normal.

A litre every 1000 miles on a 47k miles engine. No smoke, no leaks and 170 psi across the board (no 8 slightly lower) compression at the last service.

Oil is Silkolene 10w50

As a Griff owner can I jump in here?

My old standard 5 litre engine used 1-2% (ie 1-2 litres of oil per 100 litres of fuel) which was not out of the norm apparently. The new engine (slightly larger hehe) uses the same. No visible leaks and a clean engine bay.

Sunday though, driving back from the BNG - 250 miles at ...um...speeds slightly above the ...um..shall we say 70mph-ish hehe...it used a full dip ie Full to Empty. I did get 175 miles for 2/3rds of a tank of fuel though which I was over the moon with...

Anyway, I'll b@gger off now and leave you Chimo's to it.... getmecoat

yikes

Thats quite alot mate, in fact thats more than quite alot. Are you sure you have a sump plug in? rofl

I would expect a fresh engine to use a little bit while its running in, but only for the first 1000 - 1500 miles or so.

How many miles have you done in it now?

Hi Jamie, Ive done around a thousand miles since the re build....im using about the differnce between the full marker and empty marker on the dip stick of oil (10/40 semi)per 500 miles or so. Ive got no oil leaks as far as i can see and its not smoking????? It does feel a little down on power aswell frown

250,000 miles

1 litre per 1,000 miles

regular as owt (apart from mr 450 which used 3 litres per 1,000 on account of having wrong rings fitted)

As a matter of interest, Mobil 1 does not smoke when being burned!

All hydrocarbon compounds, of which family, Mobil 1 is a member of, will smoke if incompletely combusted.

42k on the clock, Chim 450. Drinks roughly half a litre every 1000 miles or so. A little more if I thrash it on a track, presumably becasue the revs are higher for longer.

Never have to top up between services. I use Castrol magnatec, as recommended by my rover race engine specialist.

1L per 1000 miles sounds reasonable for a 500. 2L per 1000 sounds excessive unless you've been giving it a lot of welly (hence more blow-by). The smaller capacity engines use a lot less oil, you might be get down to 1L per 10,000 miles on a 4.0.
