Hello, Am a 1st time TVR owner, picked up my 97 Chimaera 400 two weeks ago (from Peter Bennett - Cheshire TVR), am very happy.

Noticed two things with the car - not sure if they are 'normal' 1) The engine sounds abit 'tappety' at constant revs, though tapping noise not very loud 2) There is a slight clack from the gearbox / diff? when engaging 4th and 5th when driving quickly.

Thanks for any advice.

P.S: The MOD in my nickname refers to my initials, not any military reference!

Tappety noise could be tappets or exhaust manifold. Clack between 4th and 5th could be almost anything. Loose remote linkage???

Hello and a very big welcome to the fold.

Advice, not from me when we have some heavyweights around like shpub (Steve Heath) this guy as enough knowledge about Chims and Griffs to write a bible on the subject.

In fact HE HAS!

Get it you will find it invaluable.

Safe driving and keep it shiny side up!

Well Hello From one newbie to another
Had my chim for just over 2 months now R reg,500.
the tappity noise i get with mine happens just fro a short while till engine gets lubbed up..(Thats what i have been told) it disappears as the engine gets warm.

no idea about the Gear thing..

Just take it easy and as big Al says shiny side up.and no bombing it round bends or greasy roundabouts in the wet!!!!!(or you will be sorry).
Also dont thrash it till you've warmed up the engine
or else it will break..

Happy Driving

we northerners having a blast on 22nd June let me know if you interested...

Hi mate and welcome.

My chim ('95 4.0) has a tappy noise coming from it to. I'm not to worried about it to tell the truth. As said earlier, could be a slight leak in the exhaust manifold or the actual tappets maybe a bit worn.

As for the gear thing, does it happen when your already in gear then go from acceleration to decelleration? Could be a worn UJ but I would have thought it'd clunk in the lower gears to. Thats what my rear end clunking turned out to be!

Most of all, enjoy your new toy and prepare yourself to be talked to and stared at where ever you go!!

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice.

Am enjoying everything about the car - except that many other drivers want to race me. A VW Bora nearly crashed into me trying to overtake on the inside of a roundabout to beat me to same exit on Saturday

Saw a red Griff 500 in Huddersfield on Saturday too, does it belong to anyone on here?
