Engine Mount Spacer

Have just done the engine mounts, what is the porpose of the spacer is it required with both styles of engine mount, and also dose it go drivers side.

The Mount Style that was on car had domed rubber ends the one I have fitted are flat ended. The driver side with spacer the rubber is a little distorted / under tension. Is this normal.
