Warm up time....how long should it be?
Discussion
When I leave work I normally sit in traffic jams for around half a mile then have another slow half mile until I reach a lovely dual carriageway that is mostly fairly clear from traffic. This part of my journey takes around 10 minutes.
Often there is someone who needs to be shown the nasty side of a 500 Chim right up my ar*e when I hit the roundabout that is at the start of the dual carriageway.
My temperature reading is usually around 70 degrees by that point, but I am holding off flooring it because all the "knowledgeable ones" say the engine should warm up enough before revving it hard.
Is a mile warm-up (or 10 minutes)enough?
Thanks
It should be a progressive process - the closer it is to fully warmed up the more gyp you can give it. Ten minutes of normal driving should usually be enough to get it warm enough for moderate amounts of welly, and a couple of minutes of that will get it fully warmed up. Remember that you're warming up the transmission as well as the engine and ten minutes sitting in traffic is doing nothing for that. I would suggest you stick with your current regime, which seems very sensible to me.
