Fuel Pump problem...
Discussion
Hi guys,
Just a slight problem here which is bound to be an electrical gremlin.
when i turn the key i can here the fuel pump prime and the relays make all their noises as expected. dont start the car, turn ignition off...no problem.
Turn the key again and the same happens, fuel pump primes - nothing strange.
Do it a thrid time and it sounds as though the fuel pump is straining and doesnt make the same sound.
It sounds as though the fuel pum/line is over pressure.
Disconnect the fuel line (petrol everywhere, very high pressure comming out), reconnect and turn the key (after waiting for petrol to evapoprate) and exactly the same thing.
Its as though the fuel line is not dropping pressure when the ignotion is switched off.....

Thats what i mean...the pressure is not backing off...like it should do when the engine is switched off....
i know before you could turn the ignition on and off as many times as you wanted without starting the engine and the pressure would drop off, so what is it that causes the pressure to be released??

Andy, make sure the fuel return hose is not crimped anywhere along the chassis,or collapsed, failing this you may find the fuel pressure regulator as jammed shut, you have had the car apart for a while
it may have dried out fuel components have a way of doing strange things when left standing, fuel injectors jam shut over long periods, check the feed to this may be crimped along its length too, check from engine to tank, good luck.

So i threaded the fuel pipes through last, making sure i didnt get them crimpped and nowhere near any heat sources!!!
As for "the car has been off the road for some time" comment...i shall treat that with the contempt it deserves...

ok - i checked the fuel lines going to the injector rail before switching the ignition on.
You could squeeze both of them and there was a bit of give in both...turned the ignition on and both went rock hard...??
is the fuel tank breather (from the carbon canister) on the opposite side of the tank to the filler cap and the fuel return goes to the same side as the filler?

Does this mean it's getting close, Mine's hopefully firing up on Sunday!!!! So i threaded the fuel pipes through last, making sure i didnt get them crimpped and nowhere near any heat sources!!!

Still got to do the breaks and finish the paint....but it is getting there...
Oh - swapped the hoses over and it is fine....must have got them crossed over when threading them through...doh!!!
