When I close the door on either side, the window traps the roof seal inside at some points. My guess is that the seal should be on the outside all the way across the width of the window, but instead it gets pinched inside at several places. This makes the door hard to close (needs a good thump) and also is deforming the seal where it gets pinched. Now, obviously when I am INSIDE the car with the lid on I can always lower the windows and raise them again. But when I am leaving the car I obviously can't do this to both windows from outside!

Any ideas?

Do the seals look worn at all ?? Just replaced mine as they were broken at a couple of the ends. Not much money to replace so might be worth just getting some new seals and see how it fares after that.

no the seals are fine but are actually being a bid damaged (well deformed anyway) by the window. suspect I may need to lower the height of the window. having done a bit of digging I think i can adjust this with a screw inside the door... will let you know
