These are the factory recommended sizes. The bible advises 225 50 15 front rather than 205 55 15 but on mine (98 PAS) they catch on the battery box.225/50/16 rears

I have gone for 205 50 15 front, to lose the beach buggy look and 245 45 16 rear, as I like the extra width.
This may be useful to check the rear size keeps the speedometer accurate. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

A few different tyre sizes have been fitted, and some different wheels as well. Most depends on your car (age / spec), and subsequently what manufacturers have made available in suitable sizes / ratings / compounds. There are many answers to your question, which most will just claim the tyre brand & sizethey have on their own car is best
So in the spirit of things 225x45/16 & 245x45/16 Toyos are best

Barreti - there weren't any precat Chimaeras - mid 1992 precat Griffiths had 215s on front.
Well bugger me
There's me ready to get all upperty that I knew better, so I go get the two '92 precat Griffith handbooks off the shelf, turn to Specifications and right there on page 45 it says
Wheels & Tyres
Front
15" x 7J aluminium alloy wheels fitted with 215 / 50 ZR low profile tyres.
Rear
16" x 7.5J aluminium alloy wheels fitted with 225 / 50 ZR low profile tyres.
I stand corrected OscarT
although I did know there were no precat Chimaeras
