98 4L Chim just towed. Was haring down the M1 and heard the a tappet start to click. Stopped, checked oil level - all OK. Thought I'd chance the 100 miles home. Sound getting worse... After about an hour, oil pressure drops to zero - light comes on - mad noise from the top of the engine. Pull over. Flatbed to garage.

I've not much knowledge here, but could the sump pickup coming loose, or the oil relief valve sticking cause a gradual degredation?

Someone in the office suggested the 'rear main bearing' may have slipped round, blocking the oil path, but he wasn't sure my engine has that feature.

Is checking the relief valve, or the sump pickup an engine out job? How about replacing the fuel pump?

Thanks in advance.

I believe the sump can be removed in situ also the relief valve changed. But running with no oil pressure for any length of time especially when clattering its top end away I would expect to see rapid deterioration on all other moving components.

Best of Luck!!
