Draining the PAS
Discussion
I had a reconditioned rack a few thousand miles ago, and noticed recently that the oil in the resevoir has lost is lushous redness and turning into a murky cloudy brown liquid. Even more recently the steering has started feeling lumpy again.
The cars well due for a bloody good service soon, but i want to sort it before then (it been an everyday car) so does anyone know how I go about completely draining the PAS system so I can put some nice new stuff in and see if that sorts it?
In the bible it says takes off the hose from the reservoir and let it drain, but surely that won't drain the oil thats in the rack to will it.
I hope this makes sense!!
Cheers, Dan

The only way to drain the oil from the rack is to start dissassembling it and I would not recommend it as you may well cause other problems.
If the seals are going and causing the discolouration, cleaning out the rack may even start leaks as the crud may be the stuff that is keeping the rack leak proof.

When I bought my Chim, the PAS fluid was black with lumps swilling about in it. (So much for fTVRsh). I drained the reservoir, [Aaaeeiiii! then refilled it, then ] ran the engine for a while to pump the fluid round, then drained it again. Three times. It finally went clear and red, then, although it looks like it needs doing again. I'm sure the underbonnet temperatures don't help...

Ok i've had a bash!! I took off the low pressure pipe that goes from the bottom of the resevoir to the rack drained what was there, put cloth over the open holes and run the engine a bit while turning the wheel, it was messy, but i think most of it came out. I've just topped it up now.
While it was up on stands I decided to take the wheels off and give it a good lubrication around the suspenion joints as it's a bit squeeky. While i was doing the front o/s, i realised it could well be the top steering UJ causing the notchy steering. I gave that a good greasing too.
Now i'm gonna wash it (first of many before pistonfest!) and take it for a spin to try it!
BTW, Steve H, the rack was only reconditioned about 3000 or 4000 miles ago, and it doesn't seem to use any fluid, it just went really cloudy and brown! I think I'm safe from leaks for the time being!
Cheers for the replies lads, see you at Pistonfest hopefully

Update.... just poppped the car up to top cats and it turns out the notchy steering was a buggered UJ (or is it CV?) joint on the steering. They didn't have a spare but as a temporary fix its just had the seal broken open and had some teflon based grease put in it. Should do me till it's service i reckon. Definately till after pistonfest anyway!! It's amazing, the steering has never felt so good. I guess it must have been on it's way out for a while now.
Also i've got rid of the squeeky suspension (temporaraly i guess) buy squirting every joint with white grease. It's now quiet as a mouse even over the biggest potholes!!
The car is a joy to drive again...yaaay!!
Just gotta sort the juddering diff next (suspected wrong oil in it)
