Outrigger costs, quotes required?
Discussion
Please be gentle, I'm suffering from shock!!!!
After cleaning the car up for the MOT, I've found the dreaded rot has struck!!
Yes you guessed it, both the outriggers are shot.
I've been quoted a price for lifting and replacing both sides.
The garage has checked the rest of the chassis, and says it all looks very good and should not require any other work at this stage. Obviously they may find something else, but going under the car with the Machanic / chassis man, suggests the rest is all in great condition.
He checked all the places he said normally need doing at the samw time.
The car is a 95 Chimaera and is in great condition.
So, just so you know, i'm not doing it! its going to a specialist for this work, and I know the body is coming off.
So, your best price for this work (both ouriggers replaced) would be what?????????
Steady now!!!!

Trackcar, do you know anyone who can do this now.
How did you do it. both sides for £1000, without taking the body off? how can this be done?
Oh and sorry wacky! Of course I meant the rest of the car.
Some cars cars are bad all over, mine is fine in general apart from the outriggers.
Places are saying its not possible to do this without taking the body off. I thought this was the case.
If I thought you could do this without taking the body off I'd be ringing the firms.
Can anyone give me some names and numbers to get some more ideas.

I'm sure it is Patrick, it looks a stunner going off your profile pic......Some cars cars are bad all over, mine is fine in general apart from the outriggers.

Good luck with the repair, and here's hoping the final bill will not end up being TOO bad......
I used to do it by firstly chopping out the rusty section with a small air grinder. The on the good metal remaining shape it so that it angles like this:
--------------------------------------
-
-
-
-----------------------------
next cut your new metal to fit against it like this:
-----------------------------------
- -
- -
- -
---------------------------
you can then weld the bit which is tucked up inside teh fibreglass from underneath, ie you weld the tubes together from the INSIDE of the tube as far as you can.
then you make a plate that can be welded onto the opening from underneath ..
hope that makes sense.
I dont know anyone else who does it this way, but it's by far the easiest and cheapest way and once it's covered in paint and underseal you cant tell.

I'm having a job seeing this in my head from the post, track car. Can you knock out a bit more detail as this is sounding good!
Welding from inside eh! I think its a good idea but due to my head not quite being there on this and also the whole side tube appears to need replacing. This must be possible?
Anyone else seen this done, and then a simple welded plate on the bottom.
Don't forget everyone, some costs please as well in case this can't be done by anyone, as trackcar appears to be retired?

Plus point to lifting the body off - you can then have a good look around the car!!!
Must admit i like this way of doing it and i fully understand what you mean....weld the top of the pipe first leaving a large(ish) hole at the bottom and then weld that up.....like it!!!
Think i might do my next one like that....

A thought having just spent three days resealing my outriggers. Mine are OK so this rot issue isn't a problem for me yet.
Is it possible to leave the body on the chassis and cut away the outriggers part way or all the way back to the centre ladder frame, i.e. including the wheel arch hanger tubes and centre tubes from under the seat tubs. That way a complete new section can be fabricated off the car and offered up for welding at more accessible areas.

Things are hotting up on this outrigger repair!!!!
Having spoken to local dealers in my area, one of the two local dealers are saying they can do the job without removing the body. They said they have perfected this method and have done endless cars in this way.
Now the wife is far happier with the 'one third' of the previous quote I've had, pending inspection of the car by the dealer. Of course it may go up in price once he has me in his grasp!
But this is sounding very good at this stage. I'll be back with the full info once I've got it.

My outriggers needed replacing, so I took the body off, only to discover the rails from the backbose ssuare tubes were also rusted through. They rusted through where they were up against the body and socould not see it. I would have thought a ful body off or atleast a lift would make sure that all rusted bits could bee seen.

My 94 chimaera is also in need of some major chassis work. The passenger side outrigger is crumbling away - both the tube under the door sill and the diagonal brace from the centre of the chassis are crumbling at the join just behind the wheel.
I was very disappointed at first, but now realised it is almost 13 years old, so am prepared to throw some money at it to make it last another 13 years.
Only one side needs work at the moment, but i would like both sides rebuilt for peace of mind. Was also considering a full body of restoration and treatment.
Wont be doing this until late next year though as my wedding next August has to come first!
