engine / gearbox removal
Discussion
Hi there again , not much happened since my last post , work and all that blah blah''' So , the heads and ancilliary bits are all off , heads stripped and semi re-furbed. Then I thought about it a bit more and came back to the original plan that my engine compartment chassis refurb would be made so much easier if I just took the whole b###*y lot out! I've got access to a proper four poster lift jobby and an engine hoist so the big question is , does it all come out in one lump (engine and gearbox together) or do we have to split them up beforehand ? Had a gander in the 'bible' but short of reading it cover to cover didn't find a reference to engine removal/refit.
Any practical advice would be greatly appreciated as the lifting hardware is only available as a favour from a garage owning mate who wont' be happy if it's still on there monday morning when the paying work starts!!

Nope Shpub not in my book . Just in case I'm way off the mark here, I always thought that when you guys referred to 'the bible' you were speaking about the 'Steve Heath' Book about the TVR Griffith and Chimaera. If so then pages 56 to 61 in my book start with 'engine does not run smoothly 56 , noises from petrol tank 57 and then page 68 is chapter 5 THE CHASSIS' Nope not a bean about engine removal. I also noticed that page 56 did not feature in the index so maybe I've got a dodgy edition?
You have the first edition and not the second which is twice the size. see www.tvrbooks.co.uk

Ah Ha so thats it !! And judging from your moniker I'm speaking to the author of the afore mentioned publication.... OK to be honest when I bought it on fleabay I thought i was buying from source (dont know why tho') so apologies for not being a bit more on the ball and yes I'll be purchasing the full monty version from your very boutique soon. But go on Shpub , help me out , i've got today off and I could waste an awful lot of time going down the wrong path. Do they come out together or will I have to split em ?
It all depends on how good a hoist you have. To get them out together requires the rear of the car to be jacked up so that the engine/gearbox comes out parallel but at an angle to the body. This requires a hoist with a lot of reach. Some simply can't get the legs under the car far enough because the jib is too short.
Splitting the box and dropping it out from underneath makes the engine removal easier and less dependent on the kit you have.
I would split and drop the box. It may take a bit longer but it is likley to be less frought with problems.
