I know that this has been covered before, but thought I'd ask if there are any other deas on diagnosis.

I noticed about a week ago the engine had starte hunting a little, and revs seemed a little higher than usual when stationary. Then I noticed the engine temp..! 110 yikes

Keeping an eye on it, the engine revs when at traffic lights seem to rest at 1800, dropping to 950 after about 30 seconds (highly embarrassing at time)

Engine temp seems to hold at 90 in fast moving traffic, slowly rising to 110 when stopped. Worried about leaving her running now.. frown
Also think she is running rich as popping banging to an extreme level as well...

I need to check Stepper, Air Filter, Dizzy.. Anything else?

Any evidence of head gasket failure- oil in water, sludge under expansion tank cap?

I think I would check the temps first, the fan belt is top of the list.

Stick a laser i/r thermometer on the top hose to verify your temp gauge. You can also check that the stat is opening using the method (and a bit of patience). Go round the coolant 'circuit' with the thermometer & you should be able to see a good drop over the rad (10C).
