No.

Every single disc you will find for sale without exception is plain old cast iron. They all rust, it's a fact of life. The rate of rusting is normally negligeable compared to normal wear and tear from braking, and the only harm is that they look a bit tatty if you tend to leave the car standing for long periods. You can paint the disc to prevent the rest of them from rusting, but the area swept by the pads can't be painted and it's going to rust if you leave them.

I normally Spray the inner ring to the wheel with a Dark grey zinc primer, this is still there after several thousand miles. Beamers do this on most of there cars to stop them rusting before they are sold.

Don't for christs sake spray alloy acid wheel cleaner anywhere near them as this sets off the rust faster than being in the sea!! (hence when I was a small boy, I did this and wondered why my new front discs were a dull brown 15 mins after cleaning them)

Forgot to mention, don't get drilled and milled discs, get the normal or spiral version only.

Drilled discs can be prone to cracking, but the better ones appear to be ok(depends how they are drilled radiused edges, material mix etc)Porsche and Bmw and many others use em so cant be that bad,i prefer grooved but use Black Diamond drilled, no problems so far only time will tell.

My Chim has drilled and grooved disc all round when i bought it, all i can say at the moment is it looks good.

But i did fit drilled, grooved and vented discs all round on my MKII RS 2000 Escort with no problems or cracking at all and it did loads of track days! and before anybody says it ain't comparable to a TVR, this one had 200hp on 48's, and was fully sorted.

Yes,i think you will find its only the cheaper unbranded ones that crack, but then i have seen solid discs(undrilled or grooved)crack,so there you gowinkprobably more down to quality than the fact they have holes in thembiggrin

My next door neighbour has a Boxster that had drilled and grooved disks. He hardly uses it yet the disks always look shiny. My Merc's disks are covered in rust after being left overnight.

Got the black diamond grooved discs on mine and no problems - stopping power is much improved over standard. Their pads (predator) aren't so good though. Best off with BD discs and Mintex pads.
Part numbers for discs are on my cars blog on my profile.

Could be because the garage queen stays dry and the Merc get water and muck sprayed over it?

Apart from the ones that aren't, of course.

Well OK, excluding the ones that are carbon, ceramic composite etc! The 'steel' rotors are all cast iron.

I did see grooved and dimpled discs. Get most of the looks with less of the risk. Anyone know how these compare?
