Hi guys.
I've had my Chimaera for sale for a while now, and no viewings. Are people just not buying them at the moment? I know there is the winter factor, but you can still use them loads on these clear blue days!
I didnt really want to sell it and I'm sure you'll all say don't but I have my eye on something else at the moment and cant afford both. I rackon I'll get another one in a couple of years.

The car is such a nice one and seems stupid to sell it for any less although I'll take £8450 for it nowfrown

Any ideas?? I've put it on ebay and autotrader and got nothing.

Perhaps people can't borrow money like they used to be able to. Also, Christmas is coming up so people will be spending money showing what good Christians they are. hehe

Hi,

I'm finding the same - she runs beautifully and I don't really want to sell but I've recently bought a Tamora so need the space - I've spent an absolute fortune on mine including an engine rebuild. In spite of looking for what I reckon is a very realistic price (ie bloody cheap!) I'm getting little interest through Pistonheads and mainly jokers on fleabay. I'm thinking about trying a dealer on a brokerage basis. Don't know what the reason is but suspect it's cash and Christmas.

Hope you have some luck.

All best,
Neville

Well I just sold mine on Friday, but it was very difficult.

I'd been trying on and off for a full year and I had dropped the price several times. In the end I dropped it to £6950 and had a lot of interest, even though I had none whatsoever 2 months ago when it was £7250? I took £6700 in the end. The car was not perfect but it was solid and reliable, with excellent paint, good SH and a long MOT, so the new buyer has a bargain in my opinion.

Even allowing for the winter factor, prices have certainly dropped a lot in the last 12 months - presumably a knock-on effect from the factory closure hitting prices of the newer models.

Everything will sell at the right price - it's just that the 'right' price may not be a price that you'd like!

Not just Chimaeras. The chaps on the Porsche forum are talking about how Boxsters aren't selling.

Winter + Christmas + lack of cash...

So its not just me then..good and bad. At anything less than £8k it seems silly to sell mine. I do need the money to pay for another car but not that badly. What I'm most annoyed about is that I passed up an offer of £9k about 3 months ago which I thought wasn't quite enough and in the end decided not to sellfrown Oh well, I'm a moron...
If they are going so cheap, why are people buying anything else?? (sportscars)

It's the time of year, I'm sure. Happens every autumn/winter particularly to slightly older Chims which are bought more as week-end 'toys' than the more expensive newer ones which are more often used more regularly IMHO.

When the factory closed the newer non-RV8 "T" models were the ones to get hit pricewise. Chims and Griffs were strong leading into the spring and summer. Nick.

Its not just cars.
The housing market is very quiet at the moment, this has a knock on effect

Yep, I think there is a general concern re economy, and a consequent reluctance to splash out on new cars.

However, in addition, the fact is that Chimaeras are now firmly in the enthusiast market; supply and demand - prices are probably slipping. Basically, less people are buying an ageing car from an obsolete brand.

Don't get me wrong - I've had two and am tempted to buy a third, they are a 'fun' car....but technologically/dynamically outclassed by a lot of newer cars (albeit not as stylish or as good to listen to biggrin).

Based on the price I got when selling my 1998'S 400 last month, and based on others' experience of selling, I honestly think that as a rule of thumb a more realistic actual selling price (as opposed to asking price, and assuming you don't want to wait for a year to sell) is up to 20% less than most Pistonheads prices (i.e. a good £12k car being nearer £9.5k-£10k). I realise that probably doesnt sound good, but let's face it, Chim depreciation overall for most hasnt been too bad in the past couple of years.

I think it's been pretty bad actually. To pay almost £10k for a car that was already 11 years old and then sell it 2 1/2 years later for less than £7k, certainly wasn't part of my plan when I bought it. I know this is just a personal example and doesn't therefore prove anything, but more than 30% depreciation on an 11 year old car, in addition to the (expected) high insurance and maintenance costs, means that my Chim experience has worked out at over £1.50 per mile, ouch!

(OK - my fault - I should have reduced the cost per mile by driving more, but the point's still valid I think)

Yep, I suppose I've been thinking of it in absoloute terms, rather than relative. As a percentage it's quite high, but in your example approx £1200 pa depreciation is probably less than if you'd spent £10k on a Ford Focus etc.

Location is probably a factor too. If you are "darn sarf" where there are a lot of reputable dealers and a lot of owners then buyers have the pick of the bunch. If on the other hand you live in the Highlands of Scotland and yours is perhaps the only TVR for sale within 200miles, the ineterst may be higher (although still doesn't guarantee a sale).

yep, I did expect relatively high running costs and a bit of depreciation. My insurance is fairly cheap though. The only reason I'm selling is because at my age, its kind of silly to have 4 cars...(girlf only uses the Skud currently) I would take £8k minimum for mine I guess but no less. Its a bit like M series TVR's, they're a bargain in terms of £/pace/looks. They took a hit becuase the Chim and griffs got cheaper and I suppose these are getting cheaper because the TVR engine cars are dropping, dont want one of them though frown

I suppose we have to keep it in perspective.

The Chimaera depreciation was disappointing, mainly because prices had been so relatively stable for so long, but I'm hoping to replace it with £3ks worth of 7/8 year old barge with auto, aircon, leather and electric everything that cost comfortably over £30k new - now that's the kind of depreciation I like!

You car looks like great value BTW - do you absolutely have to sell it right now? Can you not keep it until Spring?

Taxes are going up, and people have less money to spend on luxury toys. Expensive toys are always the first to be hit when times are hard...

It will still sell, but certainly pre-Chrimbo is not a good time to sell such things as a rule.. March however, could be a different story.

I could keep it until the spring, but I want to buy another car via Auction next week with a bit of luck.. As I said, I dont really want both on my drive, costly to bridge both and wouldn't go down at all well with my already understanding ladyfriendwink Not the end of the world, I'm already very lucky to have this one!

Mines up for sale on this site for over a month with on interest. Apart from a certain dealer who approached me and offered £6000 to buy it back. Needless to say its still in my garage.

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/245127.htm

Mine is on the highish price side but I know the chassis is good and it's a good one as to speak. I don't want to sell it to cheaply. Also I keep her longer by telling the misus I've had no interestdriving

My daughter and other half have cash waiting for a nice cheap Chim, driving they are young on a limited budget and are willing to spend up £7k, for the right car, they not being taken that seriously by sellers so i will be tagging along when we are viewing,So if any of you guys would take this sort of figure for yours at this time of the year, mail me via my profile with details please,If you know of cars to avoid also? that would be greatwink There are a few around at this sort of price and we will be looking at them over the next week or so, obviously we would prefer a PH/ TVRCC car but with there budget beggars can`t be choosers biggrin
Thanks Tony
