First noticed the exhaust was being a little poppy happy, even at low revs - Really scary now and many more thumbs up, except from the girlfriend who now always has her head buried in embarrassment. biglaugh

Then after a drive at night, I noticed that there was a strange red glow in the engine. Opened the bonnet to see that the drivers side of the exhaust is glowing red hot where I'd assume the pre-cats are.

What coud be causing this down the one side?

Fantastic. That was the answer I was looking for!

Will it cause too much of a problem as I won't have time to rip them out for a few weeks and we have London Thunder coming up.. Plus a few other odd journeys..

If you don't mind risking further heat damage to the engine bay, like melted bushes... No.

Ok, ok, I meant Thunder in the Tunnels. - With them out, it could make me sound even better!

nono Always remove pre-cats. Hell, take the main one out whilst you are at it biggrin
Hmmm. Neighbours get p!ssed off enough at the mo. With precats coming out, I might get the odd irritated comment. With the main cat out, i think I'd have to move...

Is the car down on power at all? The 'popping' can be caused by unburnt fuel reaching the cats and then burning off... this can cause the cats to overheat/glow. Check HT leads are connected properly, dizzy cap secure, and the condition of the plugs to see if any of them are sooting up.

Or, as others say, it could simply be a blocked cat.

Removing the pre-cats doesnt really make any differnece to the sound, so dont worry about the neighbours.

Changing HT leads and shrouds this weekend first, as noticed one was working loose. and couple looking tired..

If this sorts the problem, I'll be a happy chappie. Otherwise it'll be a long weekend of stripping out the pre-cats.

Really not looking forward to removing pre-cats though. Seems a lot of ball ache to do..
