My father's just got a new Passat (bear with me), and it has the most astounding wiper blades I've ever seen. My excitement made me think two things:

1) I need to get out more
2) They would be good on the Chim.

What's so good? Well, they seem to be completely rubber, and bend to a smooth half-moon when lifted from the windscreen. So if you've got a heavily-curved windscreen then they should work all the way to the edges: my current wipers come away from the screen where it bends sharply at the two sides.

Has anyone else either (a) tried, or (b) succeeded in fitting these to a Chim? Does anyone know if they're standard fitting, or whether you can get hold of them? I probably won't be near the car again for a couple of weeks, and I didn't take a piccy or try to dissassembleinvestigate them, but I've gone all enthusiastic.

I have a new Passatt and whilst the wipers look great they are not that good after a while for some reason. However I suppose that you will not use them that much ( due to the wonderful waether we get in this country! )

I can *REALLY* recommend the little yellow bottle (otherwise known as RainX) - I've seen it discussed elsewhere on here but my (now) father in law introduced me to it about 4 years ago and it is superb stuff. I haven't yet found a downside to the stuff.

Once you've done your windscreen properly with it you will rarely need to use your wipers anyway!!!

You'll need to keep treating it every month or so to keep up the effect but it's hardly a chore.

The only downside to RainX is that if you do use the wipers there is always a very thin film of water where they are wiping. This is why it is not recommended for use on windscreens but is recommended for crash helmet visors. Works a treat with no wipers on though.

Gotta say that's never been a problem that I've come across - not saying that it doesn't leave a thin film of water though, just that it's never been a problem. I usually take having to put the wipers on as a sign that I need to reapply another coat of RainX!

You say it's not recommended for windscreens though? Hmm ... thought that was the whole *POINT* of RainX?

That boy's a nutter - just kidding

Going back a few decades RainX was a mail order only product sold to bikers for use on crash helmet visors. I remember at the time it was not recommended for windscreens but I tried it anyway but it made it worse with the wipers going at night, glare from lights etc. I have not used it since, it may not even be the same stuff today. I appologise for any inconvenience caused to RainX addicts.

God I hope you're kidding with that appology as difference of opinion is what makes life interesting and the reason for the existence of PistonHeads!

I think you do still get a slight film of water left *IMMEDIATELY* after the wipers have made their sweep but that seems to disappear within a fraction of a second. I guess the obvious answer is suck it and see ... if you don't like it then an application of glass cleaner will take it off again!

I love the stuff *MYSELF* - I find that I very rarely have to even put my wipers on and any non-converts are invariably gobsmacked when they see the water just scoot straight off the glass when moving ... kinda like watching two identical poles of magnets repelling each other!

I did suck it once and saw, but it left a thin film of water.......................

Serious - me - one of the few faults I don't have.

Well I'm with Ivan on this one.

Use to use it on the MX5 (OK don't take the p1ss, I've moved on since then).

OK after initial coats, but as it started to wear off all smeary.. apply new coat still smeary... let it wear off never used it since.

you have to get the screen REALLY clean before application of rain-x - otherwise smears

I use it religiously and I love it.
Another way to get the full benefit (but it must be raining!) is go to the pub at lunchtime with the wife, get a few beers down you and let her drive home.
With a slightly dizzy feeling head, decent road speed and Rain-X wizzing off the top/sides of screen you don't really need and illigal drugs!

One more serious note ...

... if you do use the stuff and you have excema or dry / broken skin then wear some sort of gloves. I forgot when I did my front/rear screens this morning and it has dried out the skin on my hands something cruel - to the point where just moving my fingers causes the skin to crack and bleed - but my hands are normally pretty bad for that anyway, the RainX (like most chemical based solutions) just aggravates it!

So what happens when a fly (or six) gets splattered all over the windscreen and you're using rainX?
