Suspect I have a leaky crank seal behind the flywheel. Anyone know if this can be accessed to change with the engine in situ?

Yes. Remove gearbox and clutch and you can get to it. If its leaky, chcek the clutch very carefully as the oil can contaminate the plates. Also worth checking the rest of the clutch while the gearbox is out.

I was told this was very rare, and absolute anal cleaning to check for sump leak was required....... I too have blown the seal, but its not leaking too much so will get done when box is out or engine replaced (seems like clutch time is when to do it ~ but if I end up with a 100k clutch I could be waiting forever... fair trade wink)

Thanks. Sadly (and really annoyingly as the clutch is fresh) I think that is exactly what has happened... loads of clutch judder and oil level dropping too fast. Clutching ( sorry hehe ) at straws, could oil from any other source (apart from the g/box) feasibly find its way onto the clutch?

ETA not yet had it in the air to remove the inspection bung and check what's in there

I have the same sort of problem with the clutch, and mine turned out to be the clutch slave cylinder leaking inside the bell housing. If you have a later T5 gearbox you can access through the black bung in the gearbox bell housing. Easy job to change without removing any of the big bits. I managed to burn the oil off the clutch as I caught it before it got to bad.

Hope this helps
