Coming Aboard! (Don't mind if I do)
Discussion
Hey guys, picking up my first chimaera next saturday so just thought I'd say hi.
It's a '98 400 in crystal verde and I am so excited that I had to be told to "stop showing off in front of my friends" by my mother recently... Its a long time since that happened last!
still trying to secure some slightly cheaper insurance; my best quote so far is £1350. I'm not being helped by being 23, only having 1 years no claims and 6 points on the license. I have tried various options with adding older drivers and this is the best I can manage. I'm not overly fussed but a couple hundred quid off that would be much appreciated.
In high hopes and expectations,
Dom

Dom,
Welcome to the fold (it's a Chim by the way, (your profile) chimps are in Zoos!). You will love being a TVR owner and all your friends will envy you, except those misguided ones who believe that TVR's are unreliable
Make sure you use it lots and it will almost certainly give you years of trouble free
motoring.
Almost last thing...blue ones are fastest! Last thing, other road users will want to give it large when they see you, esp those in Max Power 'tarts window boxes', let them and be safe, it'll bite yer 'arris if you don't take care!

There are a few insurance companies that are TVR sympathetic, but none of these are sympathetic to younger drivers with only one car. I found that Direct line were very cheap, less than half the price of the next cheapest quote. I was 24 when I got mine 6 months ago. Enjoy.
PS:
Recommend doing IAM training, helped me protect my investment. Most important thing I learned was: "get to the correct speed for the corner, THEN change down to the correct gear for that speed". I used to use a bit of engine braking in my Golf, quickly found that this would send me through a hedge backwards. Engine braking = bad.

Are you a member of the TVR club? The club insurance scheme was pretty reasonable for me when I got my Chimaera at 23, but they insured me because I had owned a few other TVRs as well. Could be worth a try?
Oh, you will enjoy it, but TAKE IT EASY for a few months, and get used to the car before really playing. There are two main reasons for this.
1. It is a LOT faster than your alpha so be cautious, and there are too many people who get up close and personal with a ditch within a few months of owning their first one. Oh, and beware of a heavy right foot when entering roundabouts, it is easy to rear-end the chap in front who pulled on a second ago....
2. The weather means the roads are not ideal for Chimaera driving, so be careful, remember it is light weight and powerful, the tail can overtake very quickly.

Hi Dom
Welcome. I am an experienced Chim owner of at least 7 days standing now and have just driven 160 mile round trip mainly on the M25 in cold , rain ,not the best conditions but it probably was one of the most enjoyable drives on the M25 I have had ,if that is possible.
It seems pretty good on jungle juice as well although I was taking it easy, probably upper 20s.
Drive safely

Welcome to the wonderful world of TVR.
I've owned my Chim for just over three months now and it certainly took me a few weeks to get to know it. It is, in my opinion, a very easy car to drive but hasten to add one you never take liberties with. Many a wise word from much wiser owners here than me have already commented on that. Just be mindful and respect it and it will reward beyond what you ever imagined. The first opportunity you get - hopefully soon when this wet weather passes - is get out with the roof down
Oh, and be prepared for people wanting to talk to you and ask about the Chim - they do get attention. Most of all enjoy and happy motoring

See this thread as a cautionary tale: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Page 5 of the thread near the bottom is where it gets interesting from a new owner point of view. Poor Ollie had only had the beast a week & about your age and has experience of powerful rear wheel drive cars.
They DO bite!

Hi Dominic
Welcome to the fold! As has been said, take it easy for a short while till your fully at ease with it then come Spring and the drier weather give it some serious beans.
Seasider will be along in a minute to tell you that you "should have bought a Griff"
but you KNOW you've got the right car to look good down those country roads.
Enjoy

I'm surprised and somewhat disappointed you let it pass unmolested...so I guess you REALLY must be busy at work

Get stuck in...
Had mine a year now. So bought it when the roads were getting cold and damp.
So can NOT hear this enough. BE CAREFUL.
The number of times in the first few months the back end decided to fishtail for 'no apparent reason' is ridiculous. I'm sure you'll soon learn that so much more respect is required with these things. Keep it on the black stuff, don't take risks with other road users and enjoy the attention you get. You can learn how to smoke those w@nkers at a later date....
Have a word with Adrian Flux. Did quite a good deal with me, and worth having a look at the ride drive scheme...
Now.
More importantly.
Will you have her in time for the Thunder in the Tunnels??? - Would be a great way to introduce a new member into the fold...
Edited as realise you said 'next' Sat. Maybe on the next random run then...
Don't get too nervous with anticipation.

Congratulations on the purchase,
You'll be exactly how I was and most of the other guys on here when they were waiting for the collection day. Slow clock syndrome as I was introduced to it as.
Definitely rate Hagerty, they gave me a sub £700 quote keeping car on driveway with a SP50, 23 like yourself. If it was in a garage the insurance would have been under £400.
And they say you never know how good the insurance company is until you need to use them. And up to this point even though I've had trouble with the claim, the claim handlers have been top notch and attempted to push things along anyway they can.
It's been said already in this thread, respect the car, then respect it some more, you will have 'moments' as tyre_tread likes to call them, and you will find out that adrenaline is brown.
As you have also said, I hope I have satisfied the statistician too, because I'm in the market for a replacement too.
