I recently had new shocks fitted to my car. Along with the shocks I also supplied a set of poly bushes. However the garage didn't fit all the poly bushes as they said the existing ones were fine. Although the handling of the car is much better, I'm still not sure about the bushes am now concerned that the garage may have not fitted them to save tem the and effort. Just wanted to know how to check if the existing bushes are OK.

Get the car in the air so that the wishbone is free to move, then get a crow bar between the bush mount 'eye' of the wishbone and the chassis rail, heave on crow bar and watch the bush / wishbone mount it should only move a small amount 2-3mm at very most

Also look to see that the wishbones are centrally located, when the rubber ones are shot they tend to wander, sometimes to the extent that you can see metal on metal contact

Didn't they put washers on either end of the bushes in later years for this reason?

Yep, but don't know when. Mine is a late 98 car and didn't have them
