LPG TVR !?!?!?!?!?
Discussion
To "justify" the running cost of a TVR I bought factory converted Focus 1.8 LPG!!. Although I get constant abuse from all my BMW colleagues the running cost are amazing.. 45litre tank costs £16.50 to fill up and I can do about 360 miles on it. Dare I say it but has anyone got a converted TVR out there??? Apparently you can convert any petrol engine but is it just not the done thing!?

I think mister Blair is going to lump a load of tax on LPG soon,so dont get too excited.!!
Here here. My thoughts exactly. LPG has two years at best and quite possibly less.
Yes, Tax is likely to increase on LPG - but dont expect it to rise that much... even if they add 100% on the tax it is still significantly cheaper than Super anyway. It will never reach the same levels of taxation as normal petrol as it is a corner stone of the governments policy for cleaner air. In order to meet with the various emmissions targets they need to introduce more LPG fuels cars & vehicles to the roads.... and the only way to do this it to make it financially viable.
For them to effectively price LPG higher would be financial & voter suicide. How many millions have the petrol companies, independant converters and car manufacturers put into doing this? I am sure that we are in excess of £250M so far and the spend is still continuing....
So for the government to increase the taxation by much would have two of the major political lobbist groups on their back (the motor and oil industries!). So, it will go up, but lets be honest and realistic here - from 36p a litre to probably 42p a litre....
Cheers,
Paul
P.S. The volume of LPG sold is no where near that of petrol so an increase in taxation would have VERY LITTLE affect to the overall taxes raised.
P.P.S. And before anyone accuses me of being a Blair supporter - I am not - I am just illustrating the reality of the situation and not supporting them in any way, shape or form....
P.P.P.S. Its a real shame that I have to put the previous comment on - but unfortunately I make one comment and everyone slags me off and I get hate mail and postings.... sad
I'd thought of that when I was looking to get my A8 converted during the petrol strikes. Gave up when I discovered that grants are only available on new or very nearly new cars, and then doubts were raised about the safety of many installations/installers.
But if you were to consider it,
a/ you'd hardly notice a slight performance hit in a TVR now would you?
b/ many installs use a doughnut tank which fits in a spare wheel well. Not huge, and possibly in a Chimaera boot would still leave enough room to get the roof panel in.

dont forget that LPG actually has an octane rating of around 110...campared with 97ish for super unleaded..
I think you've got your "facts" a bit confused. LPG is no-where near 110 RON. LPG has a LOWER Caorific value than 95 RON. That's why converted cars use more LPG to maintain the same performance, or actually run less efficiently (SLOWER) than 95 RON Unleaded. You would need to adjust the ECU on TVR's (sweeping statement, sorry) to "enjoy" LPG.

From what I remember of a similar thread in the last year, Mark Adams (he of tuning v8 fame) seemed to reckon that the only reason cars get less performance on LPG is because they are tuned to run on both petrol and LPG. If you ditch petrol completely, you can get more performance out of your engine on LPG. I believe he said he has done this on one (or more?) of his vehicles - the main downside is that it takes up more space, and it is more dangerous in the event of an accident.
