What products are available, along with good old elbow grease, to clean the visable metal parts of the engine, without damaging it?

Use plenty of WD40 and an old rag!

Use Autoglym engine clean (about £3.50/litre from Halfwits) and a stiff brush - or old paint brush. Then hose it down. Wd40 will be more expensive I'm sure!
