Can anyone offer any advice on how you get the original Pioneer unit out from a 4.5l Chimaera 2001 model? I have an Alpine unit I want to fit instead but not sure how to get the old unit out. I have looked in the Bible and nothing much seems to be mentioned about it.

I had a fitter from Toad out this morning and he seemed to think it was necessary to take the whole veneered panel out as he couldn't pull the Pioneer unit out using the catches at the side confused. Is this right or was he just trying to avoid doing the job? Any information appreciated.

The pioneer unit should come out using the side lock/catches. By placing a hand inside the casette player, mine needed a 'reasonable' amount of force to pull it out. The keys that you push into the cathes also have be correctly aligned. If they go in too easily, their probably not releasing the unit. IIRC the screws to remove the veneered panel will only become visible once the unit is out.

My pioneer came out after a bit of fight, but this was mainly because I did not have the proper removal tools. I cut 2 strips from a DVD box to release the catches each side.

The Alpine was a tight fit in the veneer hole, particularly getting the edge trim plastic clipped on the unit. But it did go in eventually.

And you cannot remove the veneer panel unless the radio is removed to get to the screws, so it has to come out first.

Thanks for the quick and helpful comments clap. Does anyone know where I can get the right 'tool' to pull the Pioneer unit out then?

you could try halfrauds as they do stock the removal keys, but my local branch did not have pioneer ones hence the use of heath robinson strips of plastic in my case.

I have a pic showing the side of the stereo(OE fit Pioneer KEH-P5900R), if you PM me soon(going out soon) I will send it on.

It can easily be done without the "proper" tool, the pic will show you how it works.

I went to my local ICE dealer, who sold me a pair of removal tools for £2. Much easier than fiddling around with screwdrivers, etc., and less likely to damage the wooden dash.

Post in General or your regional, someone nearby is bound to have some and lend them to you for 5 mins. They come in the box when you buy Pioneers wink
