Can anyone suggest a remedy/theory/reason - i recently had my exhaust manifold gaskets replaced along with the bolts and washers. I am now finding the bolts wont stay tight for very long approx 500 miles or so ,ive just tightened the top rows and they all turned at least half a turn, god knows how loose the bottom row is.
The exhaust has now stared blowing again and i expect its eating its way through the new paper gaskets!!!.
This is also the second time ive had the garage replace them because of this.

You may find its not a matter of the bolts coming loose but more likely the gaskets compressing with use, what gaskets are you using?

Were the lock washers renewed?, mine had split spring washers which I renewed and combined with metal type gaskets have been perfectly behaved.

I would always spanner check the manifolds a week or so after fitting as a matter of course. I guess the usefulness of this depends on the gasket material fitted - just something I'd do from habit I suppose wink

Not really they look like paper/card but i would guess they are a composite material? - (yellow in colour).

They may be the Victor Reinz ones(beige asbestos looking),i am currently using these myself and after the initial settling nip up after couple of weeks no problems since(ARP bolts with just plain ARP washers)where did you get yours?

furious its happened again!!!. The garage kindly changed the gaskets for me a couple of weeks ago and even used a medium lock tight, and now a couple of hundred miles later shes blowing like a bitch again!!!!.

What do i do now? The garage has so far plained the manifolds to make sure they are true and not warped, changed the bolts and washers (when they did the re build), now re fitted the manifolds and gaskets 3 times and have also tried lock tight.

Suggestions please chap as im having dirty thoughts again about buying a cerb or tuscan and getting rid of it.

No need, change your gasket design/material,speak to Spend,Green V8S etc,me personally i use the Reinz gaskets as already said and have had no issues, where did you get your gaskets who makes them?i feel they are your problem.

I had a couple of problems with my manifolds until I changed the flat washers for spring washers - perfect ever since.

Worth a check.

i have a similar but less serious problem. the nut that tightens my left windy wiper keeps working its way loose. it is annoying when it then starts to rain and one of wipers seems to be suffering from erectile disfunction. fixed by a quick tighten, but then a couple of wiper sessions later its loose again. why does it keep coming loose - should i replace the nut?

You need enough stretch on the bolts to take up the differential expansion between the steel and aluminium components. Spring washers lose their spring with age and will need to be replaced. The bolt itself will stretch too, but only the part that is not inside the block. Hence production systems often use longer bolts with sleeves to increase the amount of stretch.

The amount of stretch you are gonna get with that little exposed portion of the bolt aint worth a rubrolleyesits not lack of stretch thats the issue here, change the gasket material and fit spring washers and give the bolts a nip up after 500 miles approx, good luck.

Jesus Crist what a ba$t4rd job that was, tvr were having a laugh when they designed those manifolds. Ive changed the gaskets to clevor trevors metal ones and replaced all the spring washers as the ones that came off were flat.
Lets hope it holds this time because i cant face doing that again grumpy

I'd second that - it's a total pain in the *ss - especially so when one of the original bolts (on each side) is so welded on that it sheers off as soon as you look at it.
