Having plumped for the Ford style four-tower packs, next job was to decide how/where to mount them. My initial preference was (and still might be) to stick 'em piggy-backed in the space where the dizzy will be evicted from. But the bracketry for that looks like it might be pretty involved and, as the dizzy is still there all nice and snug, it makes measuring up a bit impractical (I'm trying to keep the car usable for as much as possible whilst working this stuff through).

So, next preference was to mount them up on the driver's side of the plenum... which is near enough where I've got to. This is the pretty rough and ready bracket I've come up with after far too many hours filing and snipping (the three top holes are a bugger to get just right due to the recesses on the plenum top that the lugs have to locate in). I chose to use 2mm ally sheet bent across the grain to try and keep some strength in the lugs, stainless might be better for those that can be arsed to work with the stuff but this seems rigid enough when in place (two coils are pretty heavy but by dropping them through rather than surface mounting that should lessen the load).

Bottom stud locates onto a bent bar that I previously made up to take the power-steering pot after it interfered with my plenum heat-sink/spacer; this being clamped by one of the inlet manifold bolts. I now need to move the PS pot again as it will interfere with the coils but it looks like I can pick up the two redundant threaded fuel rail posts next to the middle injectors as an alternative mounting point. Any other ideas gratefully received as finding a home for the pot has been the biggest headache so far (maybe that needs to go where the dizzy is).

Very nice! Thats a pretty smart bracket you've got there, how long did it take?? I'd be careful about putting the power steering resevoir down where the dizzy went as it needs to be above the pump doesn't it? The way I did it I have the coils back to back with the connectors pointing upwards. This is mounted to an L shaped bracket anchored on to the two vaccum holes on the bottom of the plenum and has another brace attaching to the fuel rail mounts below. I'll get a photo of it tomorrow morning and post it up here, it is pretty neat and fits well despite being a very simple bit of kit (not quite as cool as yours though!) and seems to do the job!

How long? Too bloody long is all I'm saying wink

I think with the PS pot, provided the vent in the cap is a little above the pump then it should be fine... It is a bugger to relocaste though

Mine is being installed by V8D at the moment using Emerald coil packs.

As soon as I get it back I will post pictures of the bracket.

I would, after looking around the engine bay, there's really nowhere that bracket can fit so a new one is needed really. Check out my one on my pic post, it was really easy to make and does the job just fine. I'll try and get some better photos of the bracket its self when I take it apart to re-tighten the rear bolts (did them up to test fit and forgot to tighten them when I was happy!)

Nick its easier for me as i have loads of room in the back of my buggy! I took the bracket out this evening and there seems to be an ideal place that i can bolt is onto the side of the casing that holds the altenator. Only prob is its kind of abover the exhausts. Ill get pics in next few days and see what you all think!

Well, mine is now on, complete with coils, with the PS pot relocated to roughly where the original coil was on the front corner of the plenum for now (it will likely be going in the dizzy gap longer term). As Im still using the car, the oem coil is now lashed across behind the alternator biggrin More coils than a Brummie girls school!

Subject to sorting some nice neat cable routes and getting lead lengths dead right, this looks like a tidy result and I'm happy with it. Will post up some pics tomorrow if I get chance just so Spend can tell me how half-cocked it is wink

Just for reference what make / model coils packs have you fitted, I'm just about to do the same.

Looks nice and simple (which is cool), but how's it mounted?

so what advantages do you have with coil packs and what else is involved other than mounting them

They are for use with an aftermarket ECU to replace the Lucas stuff & Dizzy etc. Lots of benefits but there is a lot more to it than just coil packs! Search for posts on Emerald/Omex/Megasquirt etc for details thumbup

Pupp - that bracket looks very nice.

Good packaging allowing the rocker covers to be removed
without taking offthe coil packs.

Like the 90 degree curve in the alloy - did you bend it around something to get that nice curve ?

I was working on my Emerald set-up for a few hours yesterday .. it won't start.

So - I thought I'd see if it had a spark.

So - HT leads off plugs and reconnected to a new set of plugs on top of the plenum chamber.. turn it over with
the garage lights off.. got a few sparks but not many and fairly intermittent.

Swapped wires round on the crank sensor .. no easy job to get the connectors out of the junior timer plug (and remove the bonnet on a SEAC) .. and make sure air gap is 1mm ... it was 1.6 mm.

Great now I have a good spark - every time I crank it..

But it still does not run but I do get a sort of pumping noise .. which to me indicates that I either have a spark completely in the wrong place or not much fuel.

I'm running the supplied RV845.map file and that is set-up as 4 cylinder, 90 degree BTDC, 36-1 and inductive in crank/cam distributor sensors.

I presume the 4 cylinder is just to make it run wasted spark.. but looking at other peoples (nick etc) maps it looks like they too have this same set-up..but I think that theory seem to fall down for cylinders 5 & 6.. (4 cyl is 1,4,3,2 .. if I remember right) and Rv8 is 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 (so 1,8 : 3,4: 5,6: 8,7) are fired in pairs I assume.... but I'm probably wrong as others have this set-up ..

Oh well - I'm gotta try the bradex easy start next to rule out the fuel.

Anyone else have other idea's..
